Yes, its quite upsetting. Far too much pressure on these children for far too long.

However, I did notice on cbs.com's little preview of it that the kids were often free to be more forthright and more compassionate.

I really hope they don't do another one. Its not a good thing.

I saw the commercial for it and it looked kind of cool... I think its something I would have loved at that age, but its not for every kid. Its definitely extreme.

I dont really know if I could let my kid go anywhere for FORTY days. Although an 8yo is different from a 15yo...

Hm. Seems like they must have had a few adults around...who was running the cameras? Were they planted?

In some ways it seems kind of like a democratic school, which is cool. I think it's pretty crazy to do it without any adults at all, though. Or even 16-18 year olds with childcare experience. I think the right adults could have stayed out of the way enough but still been around to keep kids from drinking bleach.

They are, my niece was filling out the forms for the casting call for the second season, but my sister told her she wouldn't take her. Niece was furious.

I think a lot of the outrage comes from underestimating kids' capabilities. I know I personally would be EXTREMELY hesitant to let my own child be on a show like that, but all kids are different and some are a lot more self-reliant than others.

I have one main question about the injuries: The article only listed 2 injuries total- one child who drank bleach and one who got burned while cooking. How do these injuries compare to adults injured during the filming of other reality shows, such as Survivor?

I'm thinking that this news story is just free publicity for the upcoming show.

My concern is that whatever random thing they may say or do will haunt them in a very wide arena for a very long time. We all know someone (I often was that person) who had something really mortifying happen or did something really dreadful at that age... we eventually got to walk away. There's no record of it I don't see anyone (save my family) from that time in my life anymore.

The reprocusions are just too much, IMO.

Well, the 22 page contract that the parents signed has prohibited them to talk about it for many, many years to come or face up to $5mil in damages? : So even if there are more horror stories, we won't hear about them until much later....perhaps, even past a legal timeframe (statute of limitations) where they could press charges. Its a mess, imo.

Yes, adults run the cameras. There is also a doctor, psychologist and other professionals on site if needed.

I'm not so concerned about the safety of the kids but more the exploitive factor, and wonder about parents that let their kids participate in a reality show. Seems kind of fame-whorish to me.

Yeah, well, it's a little weird. Reality TV is a strange phenomenon. I don't think I've ever watched it...well, I guess I saw an historical one on OPB once...at any rate, kind of strange. Like, it would make a cool premise for a summer camp, but why does it need to be on television?

My disgust does not come from an understatement of children's abilities. My disgust is for the reality show machine in general and the lengths TV producers will go to in order to get people to watch a television show.

Snoop around online and find the forms parents must sign for this show. Watch these shows knowing that what you are seeing isn't "reality." It's carefully manufactured and manipulated. /rant

ITA with the pposters. Part of me thinks it's cool, our society does tend to underestimate kid's abilities...and another part of me thinks this is horrible, exploitive and think the parents of these kids are just fame-mongers. I honestly think my ds (10) could handle it, I'd be interested in seeing how he'd do, even I tend to underestimate his abilities...but I think 40 days is way too long, I couldn't handle it, lol, and I would never want him being filmed.

I would have killed to be on a show like this as a kid. I read The Girl Who Owned the City in elementary school and would have dreams about a scenario like that.
