8 month old in pain

Hi I'm new here but I'm in desperate need of some advice!

Ds had surgery about 5 days ago. We've been at home for a couple of days now and controlling his pain with codeine and tempra. Things seemed to be going OK except that since last night he's been miserable.
I checked him over and I'm pretty sure that it's not pain resulting from the surgery.

I think the problem is that he hasn't had a bowel movement for about 3 days. Codeine is notoriously constipating. I'm trying to wean him off the codeine but he may still need it occasionally.

I read the thread below about chronic constipation but Ds is not really interested in solids yet and so I can't really add fiber to his diet. I've tried giving him water but no luck yet. Also, there was a mention of probiotics. Does anyone know if this is OK to give to an 8 month old and also OK to give in combination with codeine or tempra. Also, as far as flax oil is concerned, how would I give it to him? In a syringe? And how much?

If it is from constipation, I know that organic (or the Gerber baby brand) apple juice will help loosen baby stool. We used a 1/2 and 1/2 mixture on our DD when she hadn't gone in a week (she was only 6 weeks old then, still with the loose baby stool), and the next morning she just gushed (it was just like water, soaked the diaper through). And prune juice would probably work too (although your son might not like the flavor).
I've heard of using flax oil, but I'm not sure how much you'd need to use.
Thanks I'll try that. We'd given him 1/2 & 1/2 apple juice in the past and he liked it but would only drink a very small amount. But I'll try again. Anything's worth a shot!
Probiotics are definitely safe. You can buy a powdered kind for infants and give it to him in some pumped milk or other liquid if he takes a bottle, or just put some on your finger and rub it in his mouth. I don't know how much it will help with the constipation, but if he had antibiotics it will definitely help re-balance his gut flora.

I would think trying a tsp. of flax oil couldn't hurt, and a tsp. again in an hour or two if the first one didn't work.

I hope your baby is feeling better soon!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWW Poor little guy!!!

Don't hesitate to you a suppository for "quick relief".

But adding proboatics (SP) and definantly flax seed oil will help keep things going.

Here is a link with a bunch of tips on getting them to go. http://www.askdrsears.com/html/8/t081100.asp

Thanks for all the suggestions! I think we'll definitely have to try a little 'quick relief' tomorrow as there's been no movement at all on the issue (sorry, pun intended
--I guess I have to keep a sense of humor about the whole thing as I'm operating on no sleep and he's also showing bigtime signs of teething as well as constipation
