I am living in Eastern Europe for several months and of course the first day we were here she came down with bronchitis and an ear infection.

The doctor here is treating the ear infection with an antibiotic and prescribed a cough syrup to take morning and noon to act as an expectorant.

I am giving here the antibiotic but don't know how to proceed with the cough syrup. I have given to her once yesterday and it seemed to make her cough more. Plus it has disgusting ingredients.

I though we weren't supposed to give infants cough syrup? Even the pharmacist was surprised.

What would you do and how else could I treat her? I want to do the saline nose spray but she hates it so much I can't stand to give it to her.

Thanks!

I wouldn't give the cough syrup! I am surprised it was prescribed. Is that the norm where you are?? I have great results with honey....I know you aren't "supposed" to give it under 1 year but we always did. What about sitting in a misted area, like the bathroom and using a humidifier too. Propping her head up at sleeptime to help with breathing easier and draining anything that might be present? Can she drink a little water to thin out any secretions, nurse more if she's nursing? If you do use pain meds, tylenol or what not, you could use those too. Hope she feels better soon!

Thanks - I had a feeling about the cough med. I just got scared that she wasn't going to get better without it, which is foolish because I know she has a great immune system... (Although I worry about what the antibiotics will do to her system...) Sigh.

I don't think I'll do honey but we are running the humidifier constantly and I am nursing her as much as she will. She has been refusing other foods and drink but is nursing more today than the past few days.

I am hoping to take her to a homeopathic doctor here soon. She has a condition (unrelated) that we just learned about involving her lymph... Poor baby! (Anyone ever heard of a ranula?)
