Someone I know mentioned this and said it was okay to tell y'all.... need some letters:

THis was on (Aug. 11). She lives in Florida. The Mom was Jewish and the Dad was from Switzerland.

"I was watching "A Baby Story" on TLC and at the end of the program they were showing the family gathered at home to have a Bris to circ their baby boy. So the crew is talking to the Mohel (sp?) and he says "No, it doesn't hurt the baby. There are no nerve endings there until 6 months of age.""

Yea, I heard about the same episode. What I heard what that the Mohel told the group that was there to witness it...
"Now, you'll hear the baby cry, its not because he's in pain, babies dont feel pain until they are atleast 6 months old."

Anyways thats what I heard, I didnt see the episode, but honestly it doesnt sound too far off for that show.

Oooookay...

there needs to be a massive letter writing campaign to whatever network produces that show to let them know they should have never, ever allowed something so ridiculous to be said on-air.

You think this show is bad, you should see "Bringing Home Baby"! Every one I've seen shows the mom struggling with BF and giving bottles the whole time! Also saw one which portrayed circumcision as the "norm".

Actually, "A Baby Story" was not too bad of a show in the first few years it was on. I would say at least 1/3 of the stories were home births with MW or in birthing centers as well as quite a few water births. Lots of successful BF moms shown without bottles. Now that much of their shows are on the east coast instead of California, hospital births seem to be the majority.

The Learning Channel should think about changing their name to The Lies & Misinformation Channel IMO!!

Either that or stick to decorating and makeover shows...

Ah yea, the "Bringing home baby" is quite bad. I try to keep in mind that things on TV are very edited and maybe we arent seeing the whole picture, but that show is just terrible. Ive probably seen 2 moms who acutually did breastfeed, and I once saw an episode with a younger couple who were installing the carseat at the hospital. A little last minute I thought but it turns out the couple didnt buy a carseat because to quote the father "We figured the hospital would give us a free one, and it would be good enough."
Now, I believe that is MY responsibility as a parent to provide a safe carseat for my child, not the hospital!
Then we got to see their brand new SUV, and house they purchased 2 weeks prior, YAY!

I've heard of free carseat programs, but I doubt they're for people who just bought new SUV's and houses!!
: I always thought they only pick happy, rich people for their shows. You have to watch Discovery Health Channel to see shows about pregnancies and births that aren't all roses and fairy tales.

Since being pregnant I started watching those kinds of shows again. But I quickly stopped. The mistake parents make with BF'ing and the occasional circ'ed penis. I must say I was happy to see when they show diaper changes that most of the babies are intact! So that was kind of cool. But I stopped watching them anyway. Baby comes home with a binky in his/her mouth and the parents are upset because baby isn't latching on. @@

LOL, this is why I really think most of those shows are staged. Especially if you watch Super Nanny or Wife Swap.... most of them show nice huge houses. Then it says what the parent(s) do for a living and there's no possible way for them to afford a house like that. It's TV.....

That was the one and only episode I saw.....about the carseat. What really took the cake was towards the end of the show, they bought one of those stroller/carseat combo things

I don't have much interest in watching more....

Let me drop that baby on it's head and see if it doesn't feel pain.

(Note - In no way could I harm anyone, i'm just applying that person's "logic" in another sense.)

I can hardly watch any of those baby or birth shows anymore. I understand that TLC or Discover Health aren't responsible for the stupid misinformation the doctors, parents and other "experts" quote while they're being filmed, but it seems to be that they have a responsibility not to air information like that, kwim? I have seen so many mothers on those shows saythings like, "My milk hadn't come in yet, so the pediatrician said I needed to give the baby formula so he wouldn't be too hungry." It's usually about 24 hours PP when they get this brilliant advice.
:

On one of the birth shows, the doctor did a c-sec that they wouldn't have had to do if they'd never interfered to begin with. They induced the woman for a stupid reason (not medically necessary at all) then the induction didn't work. After a really long time, like 24 hours, I think, she wasn't even dilating, so the doc decided a c-section was in order. When they got the baby out, it was a little big, maybe 9 pounds. The doctor then claims that the reason the woman wasn't dilating was because the baby's shoulders were too broad!!! That is so medically impossible it isn't even funny. Obviously, if a baby really was huge (much bigger than 9 pounds!) it might get stuck in the birth canal under certain circumstances. But the size of the baby has nothing at all to do with whether or not the woman even dilates! She wasn't dilating because it wasn't time for her baby to be born yet. But DHC had no problem airing that stupid comment, as if there was any fact to it.

Honestly, I think they could care less whether any of the information they show those people saying has a basis in fact. They're more worried about making an interesting show than providing factual, responsible information.

I dont really like that the name "bringing home baby" implies that all babies are not born at home. I understand people want to give birth in hospitals, and thats fine. but that isnt the only place to give birth.

I know there are free carseat programs. but you have to do a lot to get one. my sister is on wic and all kinds of stuff and she tried really hard to get a free carseat but one place stopped doing it for liability reasons or something, and the other place only did it once a month and you had to take a class or something and it just wasnt possible for her to do. Her partner ended up buying one before they left the hospital.

I do think that all hospitals (and prefrably car sales places) should have a certified carseat tech on staff.
