I remember at my last vbac, there was a male student in the room (who finally left when I glared at him). Can I order someone who is not essential to the birth out of the room? I know my ob said she would put "no residents to be in attendance at the birth" on my chart but seriously....who is going to follow my obs notes? Also, I am planning to have a close friend come with me to hospital to support me.....can she speak for me ( I mean reinforce what I am saying/yelling to the ob/nurse....repeat what I am saying) and find out who is essential to the birth? I am just nervous on how much I am going to have to argue with "them" and I know how they dont seem to listen to women in labor. I just dont want to spend all of my time in labor focusing on protecting myself rather than doing what I should be doing.....birthing.

yes you can request that. Tell your nurses that you just don't feel comfortable having anyone extra in the room. Your friend can help too. You do have to say it, but she can say it loud and often if need be. She can also remind you of what your wishes are so that you can speak up, just make sure she knows all of this before hand. Remember that you can refuse anything you don't want, even unwanted people in the room. You just have to speak up. I doubt that some unnessesary person in the room would stick around long if you were screaming at them saying "get out I don't want you in here" or if someone else was

I had my daughter at a teaching hospital. I spent 10 days there before Callie was born and I allowed students in for some things, but not all. I let them come in for my ultrasounds and NSTs, but really nothing else. My peri asked if one of them could give me an internal and I told him no. You can request for them to leave and there shouldn't be any problems. I never had any issues with it and I never had to be overly forceful or rude or anything. Hopefully you will have a similar experience. It sucks to feel like everyone around you is working against you.

I remember when I was being walked into the ER for my c-section. I just knew that 2 the Dr's had to be students, so I asked. They were, and I was told that if I didn't want them to be there they wouldn't be. I said it was alright, as long as they didn't touch me

You definately have the right to refuse care/observations from students. I have had it both ways- it is nice to let them in for learning, but not at the price of your comfort. Be strong and tell the staff your preferences.

I was supposed to have a doula but somehow we got our due dates mixed up so I am having a friend come with me who knows my preferences so she will be helping to speak for me if they dont listen to me....reinforcing what I am telling them. My husband is not good for that sort of thing and was not even aware they were trying to push a c/s on me with my vbac last time.... for dr.impatientitis. I just wasnt sure if i had the right to kick people out of the room who should not be there or to refuse an insensitive resident who might be trying to force an unwanted epi or vag. exam without my consent (like last time). Even though my ob has put certain requests in my notes, I truly doubt that another delivering dr will pay attention to it. I am also thinking of posting a sign outside the delivery room not to offer meds unless I ask them.
