What does "a couple" mean to you, as in "the package should arrive in a couple of days" or "you can have a couple of crackers before dinner"?

a couple means two, however when it comes to packages in the mail I assume it means 3-7.

A couple is "approximately two", it might be 1 or 2 or 3. In my experience if someone means exactly two they say two, they say a couple when they are not sure.

Grammatically, it should be a couple means 2 and 3-6 means a few. But I tend to say that for crackers n' such for 2-4 or so.

two, but i would add a day for the day it's spoken.

eg, if i bought a book from you, and you said it would be there in a couple of days, i would assume 3 days.

we talk today.
you mail it tomorrow morning
post takes two days.
i get it on the second day of post.

but, in the case of crackers, couple means two, few means 3-5, and several is 6+.

I didn't answer the poll. For me a couple means two, maybe three.

I know that it is technically 2, and just two. But if someone meant 2 then they would say 2. If there was a little room for less or more they would say "a couple".

Technically it means 2, but when people use it I assume they mean somewhere between 1 and 4.

To me, it means the person thinks it will arrive in 2 days, but isn't 100% certain that will happen, it could be 2, or 3, or maybe 1 or 4. Like Limabean said, only with a greater chance of it being 2/3 days.

OP, I'm dying to know what made you ask this! (I say a couple is 1 or 2, btw.)

So if a couple is 2 and only 2, why not just say 2?????
