We're TTC #2 and are going the cloth route this time around. To me it seems that I'd want to use an AIO all the time! Is that strange or unheard of? Everything I've read so far suggests that these are used only occationally - in a pinch. Is it just the cost that discourages people from using them all the time? What our family needs is the easiest way to cloth diaper.

Are the fitted diapers with a waterproof cover really as absorbant as a disposable (or as an AIO for that matter)?

I plan to buy the diapers slowly and a few at a time over the duration of my pregnancy as to not be overwhelmed by the initial price so if it's more convenient to buy all AIOs, I will!

When I buy the diapers, is it reccomended that I wash them a few times? I've heard that the diapers become more absorbant after a few washings. Is this accurate?

And finally, I am predicting (as much as I can without even being pregnant yet), that I will have about a nine pound baby. What's the smallest size I should buy?

Thanks for answering all my questions! For me, being prepared will really help me and especially DH to adjust to using cloth.

I started out thinking I only wanted pockets and AIOs, but now I am doing fitteds and wool(and I only switched because the PUL was causes DS to have butt problems). i dotn think it is weird, but I think you would probably do best with prefolds until baby is out of that "pooping all the time" stage

Mine are, dont know about everyone elses, LOL. AIOs *to me* are so much more bulkier and wick a lot. I use to have to add doublers to my AIOs to get them to last a good while.

with some diapers this is true, unless they have been prewashed by the WAHM

LOL, I wouldnt be to sure about that, LOL, but I think newborns will still fit at first and you will want something that will be low rise or have a notch for the cord.

Your best bet will be to get a little of everything and try it, there is no way you can predict what will work, you just need to try.

I use quick dry AIO's 99% of the time. I haven't had any problems with leaking other than those caused by a delay in getting the diaper changed. Cost can be a factor, but really hasn't been for us (Chloe has been in mediums since we started!).

I wouldn't buy all one type of diaper at first. You never know what you'll like and what you won't. I'd get a few of each type and figure out what you like. Of course, that'll change as your baby changes. :LOL I don't think it's strange to have all AIOs though, if that's what you prefer.

That's definately true with prefolds. Most other diapers, you can wash it once and that should be fine. I suppose that's not even neccessary, but I always wash new things before I put them on DD.

I wouldn't even go there! :LOL If you buy all one size of diaper, they won't fit your baby. It's Murphy's Law! :LOL

I just have to say - HOW bizarre... I'm Erica and my dd is Hannah too - AND she was 9 lbs at birth!!

(I hear the twilight zone music in my head
)

Yep cost deters me... Plus I feel like they get worn out faster. AND in the summertime, the waterproof material (PUL) is not so breathable. I am one to have a little of everything. I have pocket/aio type diapers for the babysitter. But dh and I use fitteds or prefolds and covers. Dh doesn't touch prefolds unless they are trifolded in a wrap. I really like AIO's for outings because I just have to worry about the dipe and not all these pieces - but be careful many aio's that have a print on the outside wick around the legs - no matter the brand. I 've had the best luck with solid color aio's.

YES - although I'm not sure about a disposable, I've never used one but my nephew's seems to hold about a GALLON!

Yes - especially hemp and prefolds. I often boil to avoid having to wash so much before reaching max absorbancy.

I would have a few (very few) newborn sizes on hand and buy mostly smalls. Hannah fit in nb the first week and I squeeeeeezed her into them for about 1 or two more weeks.

I have about 40 fitted diapers (the ones that need a cover) and about 20 AIO's. I am currently replacing all the fitteds and want to be using exclusively AIOs.
My dd is a wiggle worm, and every diaper change is a struggle, and the AIO's are just so much easier! I don't care that they cost more money, I'm saving money just from not having to buy disposables every week anyway.

Hi Erika,
I use Aio's almost exclusivly on ds1 since we EC. My favorites are Luke's Drawers, Sellin Threads, and Bizzy B Hives...of those my favs are the Sellin Threads...I never have wick problems with them and Becky is such a wonderfully sweet wahm. I've gotten almost 4every single one of my dipes secondhand and these have held up the best and wick the least
