We're doing our own version of Camp Half-Blood this summer (we're call our Camp Olympian) this summer and I'm looking for a version of The Odyssey that would be a good read-aloud. I have a 10 and 8 year old, and the 5 would be listening as well. I do have on hand Book Three of Mary Pope Osburne's retelling, but it seems really simplistic. Any suggestions?

I just finished reading a version with my 11 year old son. We both really enjoyed it and I think it would be a good one for you. It is written by Geraldine McCaughrean and illustrated by Victor G Ambrus. Have fun!!

The Adventures of Odysseus published by Barefoot Books is a beautiful book. My then 6 year old and 4 year old both loved it, as did my dh and I. It isn't a picture book; it's 96 pages and very engaging. The illustrations are beautiful.

Y'know, I'm reading this very dumbed down version of the Iliad to my 6 y.o. and it's reallllllyyyy getting on my nerves. So I decided to read him that (until I find a better alternative -- I think I'll go for the Padraic Colum), but for the really good stuff, like the death of Patroklus or Hector vs. Achilles, I read from the Lattimore. He's so awesome.

Rosemary Sutcliff's The Wanderings of Odysseus is a good read and beautifully illustrated, though there's certainly nothing wrong with Padraic Colum.

The Padraic Colum books are fantastic! My boys adored both The Children's Homer and The Golden Fleece.

Yup, we liked Padric Colum. There's an audio version, if you want to go that route.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm going to look into the Padraic Colum. I've had good luck with other books of his.
