Here's a little spring cleaning adventure for your amusement...

Imagine you are me today. It's a gorgeous day in Kentucky--warm and sunny. I'm spring cleaning. The room of the day is the parlor/foyer room you enter when you first walk in my house. The computer and desk are in this room, and it's hard to keep the area tidy enough to be in the front of the house. Our house was built in 1900, so we have these really large iron grates over our heater ducts and the cold air returns. They collect dust and get generally disgusting. I remove the grate over the return that sits under my desk. I vacuum the area underneath it, which is a little ledge that dros off and leads to the ductwork in the basement. Then I take the grate outside to hose off. DD is taking a walk with her grandpa in the neighborhood, so I don't have to worry about her falling in. I bring the clean grate back in, replace it over the clean duct, and move on. I mop the floor. I tighten the screws on our glider chair, etc. Then I start organizing computer cords, because I figure that will make the area look more tidy. As I'm figuring out which cord goes to which part, a movement in the floor catches my eye. I glance down at the cold air return, where I replaced the grate 30 minutes ago, and see the whiskered face of our cat looking up at me from under the grate! Ack! I lifted up the grate and the cat ran out, but our normally dark brown tabby was light gray! He was so filthy from exploring the ductwork that he was almost unrecognizable. He ran across my freshly mopped floor until DH caught him, and then we took him outside and scrubbed him off. Kitty must have had quite an adventure! I'm so glad I noticed him while I was down under the desk looking at cords, because otherwise he'd probably have started meowing and we'd have had no idea where he was. We were worried when the other cat didn't show up for a couple hours after that, but he'd just been napping safely in another part of the house and missed all the excitement. So, PSA: lock up your cats before you clean your grates!

One of ours thought he'd explore the dryer while my daughter was throwing clothes in there. Good thing she decided to check what that thumping noise was instead of ignoring it. He was a little peturbed & slightly disheveled but otherwise unharmed.

So true! My mom said I should hire him out to other houses to clean their ductwork. That can be a pricey undertaking!
