I just don't get how people can think a natural biological thing is wrong ....

What is "extreme" breastfeeding? It that when you nurse while jumping out of a plane or mountain biking down the side of a mountain?

...and as an anthropologist, I'm willing to stick it out there and say that it's not natural to BF a child that long. 3-4 is, anthropologically speaking, a "natural" length of time to nurse a child. 5+, not so much. I'm not willing to say that it's wrong, but it is odd.

Not trying to be contrary, but I'm curious as to why you'd say the "natural" length is from 3-4 years. What research are you basing this on?

The only reason I ask is that through her research, Katherine A. Dettwyler, also an anthropologist, puts the range at 2.5-7 years. So I'm wondering why you'd say that beyond 4 is not natural? And please understand that I realize you are NOT saying it's wrong to nurse beyond 4, just not "natural." I'm wondering if there's research out there to suggest that weaning before 5 is beneficial.
