A particular cucumber salad...help me out here!

I know this is probably something most people make as a part of the summer eating experience but I've never made it in my life. It's sliced up cucumbers in a really tasty white( dairy based?) sauce and it has onions it but I have no idea what it's called! I've had various versions of it over the years and some are tastier than others. Do you know what this salad is or how to make it?

I'm hoping to locate a good recipe I can adapt to my dairy free household.

I make one with minced onions (red or green) and plain yoghurt (not low fat, balkan style is best) and mint and or prsley.Just salt and pepper for seasoning, yummy and easy. alittle drizzle of olive oil if you want.
It's basically just cucumbers in sour cream. You can add some chopped onions, celery seed, salt and pepper. If you want the cucumber slices to be soft, salt them heavily and let them sit for a little while, then squeeze the brine out of them before mixing in the other stuff.
it's also v. tasty w/dill -- scandinavian style
This is an old Hungarian recipe!! (Well, probably eastern European) You slice cucumbers really thin and put them in a collander, and salt them heavily. After about an hour, squeeze out all the liquid... in the meantime you'll have sliced up some onions thin and minced some garlic... then after the cukes are all drained and squeezed out you add vinegar, sugar and water (if this sounds right I'll go get the recipe for you) along with onions and garlic. Serve it cold! If you want you can add a couple tablespoons of sour cream.
Liz, that's how my Mom always made cucumber salad, though she added some celery seed and didn't include any garlic. But, that's different from the sour cream based salad she makes, too.
My family always mixed Miracle Whip, sugar and vinegar together then added sliced cucumbers and onions to it.

Yup, Hungarian, that's what I was going to say. I don't put garlic in mine but everything else is the same, except I sprinkle some paprika on top and let each diner decide whether or not to mix in the sour cream. It's best with sour cream though.

I can also give my recipe if it is wanted. Yummy, yummy.

My aunt used to make this. I LOVED smelling it and always was happy to see it there on the table, but I never ate it! Hers was made with sour cream...and I didn't like sour cream. But it smelled so good!
