Here's a poem I wrote almost exactly three years ago, when I was 18 weeks pregnant with my son. I came across it in my journal and felt like it totally expressed how I feel right now, and I wanted to share it with all of you. I wrote it while sitting on the shore of Lake Superior on a particularly fine day, watching the power of the roaring waves, becoming aware of the changes in my body and soul, becoming a mother. It's one of my favorite places on earth. Enjoy!
First Motherpoem
I'm struck today-
by the notion of my body,
the motion of my hips
rocking my steps into a rhythm
strange to me but somehow familiar,
quiet and old as the sand beneath me,
these stones
rocking my bones
these stones
into a life-giving mother
these stones of earth,
my girth
ever-widening, swelling,
the swelling of waves, curled and striking
these stones of the shore
this sibilant roar,
these rocks
earth and water
mixing in me-
mother
mixing in breath,
the wind groans
upon these stones
rocking the water
stirring the sand,
stilling my hand.
