[Mods, if I'm not allowed to do this just delete. I read the guidelines before posting and it seems okay, but... ]

I'm feeling bummed right now. I don't know why I let this get to me but another message board I'm on (which is about 99% women) was discussing EB/CLW and of course there were tons of people who thought it was perverted, disgusting, etc. Here is the final post I made. I just wanted to post it somewhere that people would agree with me instead of thinking I'm a total whacko. It just makes me so sad how people can pervert something so innocent and special.

[removed post I was replying to which said nursing a 4-5 year old was too weird for them]

I just want to add here that this is how I felt too before having kids. In fact, I planned to only nurse 6 months "at the most." And I too thought it was weird to nurse "when they can ask for it." However, I stopped short, even in those days, of condemning all who do so as disgusting or perverted or selfish. (Just to be clear, I know YOU, [poster], are not saying that. I'm referring to the general tone of many others on this thread.)

I hope that those who may have future children will research breastfeeding before they make grand sweeping statements about those who breastfeed. I also hope they will come to realize the following:

1. Breastfeeding is natural. It is not "ick," "eww," "gross," "absolutely disgusting," or any other synonym of yucky. This includes "extended" breastfeeding and child-led weaning.

2. A child who can talk is not too old to nurse. In fact, many kids love nursing so much they invent their own special word for it. Many do this before 12 months.

3. A child who can walk is not too old to nurse. Many many babies walk before 12 months (my daughter walked at 8 months).

4. A child suckling at a breast is not a sexual act. Even if it's a 5 year old child. Even if you think it's "gross."

This thread makes me sad. I am sad that so many of you can take such a beautiful, simple, comforting, and natural thing as a young child at a mother's breast and turn it into something twisted and immoral. I'm sad that your beliefs about breastfeeding, which are for the most part based not on experience or knowledge but on supposition and hearsay, are shaping your decisions to breastfeed any future children. But most of all I'm sad that such irrational, ignorant prejudice exists, even among a group of women I consider among the most intelligent I've met online. If women cannot take the time to learn about one of the most basic functions of their own bodies, and in fact view with disdain those who take this function to its natural conclusion, that is very sad indeed.

---

Well, that's all. As you can tell I was really "sad" there at the end, LOL. It's not often I let online stuff get to me anymore, but for some reason that thread really did.

I think your post was very thoughtful. I expect you will reach someone that reads it, even if they don't let you know.

Thanks Mamas. It makes me feel better to know that I'm not the only one out there who feels that way.

On a totally unrelated note, I just sucked down about 8 pounds of Pad Thai and mysteriously my mood has lifted about 400%. Imagine that! :LOL

I'm glad you at least have somewhere such as this that you can come and be understood. If it weren't for places like this, I probably wouldn't be as confident a BFer.

I was at mainstream forums prior to coming here and yeah the ignorance thing is huge......most there just want to live in their own world...that's why MDC is the place to be.

I very, very rarely go to mainstream boards anymore- it's just too frustrating for me!
