So when making a compilation of others stories, poems, etc...how does that generally work? Do you pay the authors? In what way do you pay them?
Does anyone know anything about this?

It really depends. I've seen calls for contributions in which the editor did not pay the authors, and then I've seen where it was paid by length (usually for prose works), and then I've seen a flat rate -- it all depends. If you want higher-quality work, I'd certainly pay the authors, because most writers don't want to just give away their best work for free. But newer writers are often willing to do so, just to get published. I personally wouldn't feel right asking for someone's work and not paying them for it, especially if I were to be making money off of the book, but that's just me. It really depends on what you're trying to do.
