I asked about avocados back when my baby was a little younger. They are a "new" fruit to me, I am not familiar with them. I bought one the other day, as my baby is 9 months old now, and has a pincher grasp and I would like to give him some foods to play with and feed himself.<br><br>
Question 1. How do you feed avocados to the independant baby who wants to be able to hold the food and eat it himself? The slimy green little slices keep slipping out of his grasp. Not much makes it to his mouth. I am reluctant to give him a piece inside of the skin. Should I be? Should I mash it up and attempt to spoon it to him<br><br>
Question 2. How do save the rest of the avocado? Obviously he can't eat all of it in one sitting. Personally, I have no desire or interest whatsoever in sharing it with him. He is still just eathing more or less one or two bites of solid food maybe twice a day. How do you save the rest of the avocado to keep it from getting so,...well, disgusting so quickly?

To keep it fresh leave the seed in the half you don't use and seal it up in an airtight container. When I fix it for us, I put a little lemon or lime juice in and it keeps it nice.<br><br>
For letting him feed himself, I would mash it up a little to where there are still some chunks left. It will be messier this way but easier to grasp.<br><br>
I know you're asking about avocados, but for self feeding we gave dd soft cubed sweet potato. It was easy for her to grasp and she loved it.

To keep avocado fresh in our household, we just wrap it up in aluminum foil. It stays green and stays fresh.

Just wanted to add that cubed steamed carrots work really well for this too. I always spoon feed avocados to my son because they're so messy.<br><br>
Good luck!

Try coating the slices in cereal dust or wheatgerm, it makes them much easier to pick up.<img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile">

What about mashing it up into a guacamole type consistency and giving baby a plastic spoon to try to eat it with. Or if you feed DC any crackers or biscuits or toast, cut them into small pieces and show DC how to dip?<br><br>
Or use the leftover to make yourself some guacamole, pull out some corn chips and enjoy?<br><br><a href="http://vegetarian.allrecipes.com/az/EasyGuacamole.asp" target="_blank">http://vegetarian.allrecipes.com/az/EasyGuacamole.asp</a><br><a href="http://appetizer.allrecipes.com/az/GourmetGuacamole.asp" target="_blank">http://appetizer.allrecipes.com/az/GourmetGuacamole.asp</a><br><br>
We usually just mashed up quacamole, add a little fresh garlic and some salsa, mix it together well and voila, a chip dip packed with nutrients.

Sage will eat it cubed fairly well.<br><br>
I also puree it with some pears mixed in, it is really yummy that way (I don't like avocado, but mixed with pear it is pretty good) I freeze it in ice cube trays and it stays just fine. I also will store it mashed for 3 days in the fridge, the top layer discolors a bit but it all still tastes fine.

I"m going to remember and try all of these tips. I have never had guacamole before. I am not really all that great in the kitchen, my husband does most of the cooking.

I always pureed ours and froze them in ice cube trays. That way you can just pop them out and thaw them when needed. no need to worry about spoilage that way.<br><br>
I usually grind up some cheerios (or whatever the natural version of them is called) and use the powder to roll any slimy foods in so that ds can pick them up easier.

Well then for heaven's sake, let me bump guacamole up to the top of my list of things to try on me and my husband's next night out to eat!

I bake the sweet potato and then peel and dice it.

Amen! I love plain avocados too. We rarely have leftovers.<img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/winky.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Wink">

You guys rock. I bought a bag of 5 avocados the other day and was trying desperately to figure out what to do with them before they go bad. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/thumb.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="thumbs up"><br><br>
DD gagged on the bit I tried her with this afternoon so I'll freeze some and try again later. I was unsure if they'd be ok frozen or not, so thanks for the avacado thread!!<img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/mischievous.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="mischief">
