A Strap-on for Your Bunion?

I have a swollen joint at the base of my big toe with intermittent aching that probably could be described as arthritis, but I'm not sure about that.

I'm assuming this is the beginning stages of a bunion and would love to keep the issue from progressing. I watched my grandfather suffer for years from his, and recover slowly from the surgery he finally had a few years ago. It wasn't fine, either way, though it's a lot better for him these days. I'd like to skip all that, obviously.

Anybody have any experience with http://www.footsmart.com/P-Bunion-Regulator-40057.aspx or something similar? I'd love to get an opinion whether they're useful or not.

Maybe I just need to break down and find a good podiatrist.

Those things may relieve some of the pain from a bunion. But, they won't cure it. They are also very uncomfortable to wear!

I had major bunion surgery on both feet when I was just 14 years old. I was horrified as i thought they sounded like something really old people got
!

I wore those same things on both feet for a year before the sugery. They didn't help one bit.

Go see a good orthopedic surgeon or a podiatrist. If you do need surgery, get it done sooner rather than later.

When I had mine done (in 1973), I was in the hospital for 5-day-stays each time (plus, a couple of other stays while they worked on them further). I was in half-leg casts and on crutches from May until the day before Thanksgiving!

Today, that same surgery would be done on an out-patient basis and I would walk out of the hospital wearing a dressings and a special shoe and, maybe, using a cane, just for extra support.

Go see a doctor!

I think my mom had one of those, but it might have been after her surgery.

My grandma had bad bunions. Her feet were in such bad shape(probably from wearing shoes that her toes were squished in) that her big toe was on top of the other toes & her little toe almost met her big toe in the middle. She had her surgery when she was in her 80's. 2-3 years later my mom & one of her sisters went for a consult. they had their surgeries within a couple of months of each other(mid 40's). My aunts were fine, her bunions weren't as bad. My mom's 1 foot was fine. The other one she's had 2 more surgeries & still has some pain in the top of her foot. Both my aunt & mom were told they may have to have the surgery re-done when they get older as the surgery is not a permanent fix.

My 1 foot seems fine. the other one I'll probably end up with the surgery but probably later than my mom did. I know some of it is genetics, but I try to avoid tight pointy shoes(or at least wear ones where the point is way beyond my actual toes so they aren't squished). I also have a hammer toe on my left foot(the one with the worse bunion). My big toe rests a bit ontop of the next toe. It has been like this since I was a teen & I wasn't wearing high heeled or pointy shoes. It was rare(once a year) if I did.
