My friend wrote this to me and needs some help...I'm not sure what to tell her so I thought I'd turn to my MDC friends who are so knowledgable in these things!

Here is her story:

Hi Bobbi, I was hoping you might be able to help me with this! I am tired of the doctors not finding any reason for the menstural problems I have and they are talking about a possible hysterectomy at some point soon to resolve them. We want another child so of course that is not what I want to do and over the years it seems like they would rather take some drastic measure or throw me on some medicine rather than finding a cause. Long story short I have never had normal periods I would bleed for days, months, weeks at a time. I have been on MANY birth controls that make me bleed even more including depo provera. Seven years ago I stopped getting periods all together and have had to go on Clomid 3 times to get pregnant. I have had one miscarriage, 5 polyps removed, and right now I have an unexplained enlarged uterus. I have had a lot of bleeding the past 6 months (with maybe 30 days or so of no bleeding or spotting) and the past 2 months I have been having a lot of pelvic pain, bloating, and now I am having really heavy bleeding (a pad and tampon every 1 1/2 hours or so and large blood clots). I'm sorry for all the info...I know it is way TMI. LOL. But I thought you might need to know more of my history to help me! If you aren't familiar with them, then that's okay but I thought I would ask you since I know you know quite a bit about these kinds of things :)

Here are some of the herbal/homeopatics she was thinking of trying...and what they help with:

Calcarea carbonica: PMS with fatigue, anxiety, and a feeling of being overwhelmed suggest a need for this remedy. The woman may have problems with water-retention and weight gain, tender breasts, digestive upsets, and headaches. Periods often come too early and last too long, sometimes with a flow of bright red blood. A general feeling of chilliness, with clammy hands and feet, and cravings for sweets and eggs are other indications for Calcarea.
Caulophyllum: This remedy is often helpful to women with a history of irregular periods, difficulty becoming pregnant, or slow childbirth due to weak muscle tone of the uterus. Symptoms include discomfort during periods and a heavy flow of blood or other discharge. Drawing pains may be felt in the pelvic region, thighs, and legs. Stiffness or arthritis, especially in the finger-joints, often is seen when this remedy is needed.
Chamomilla: A woman likely to respond to this remedy is angry, irritable, and hypersensitive to pain. Cramping may come on, or be intensified, because of emotional upset. Flow can be very heavy, and the blood may look dark or clotted. Problems are often worse at night. Heating pads or exposure to wind may aggravate the symptoms, and motion (such as rocking or brisk walking) may help to reduce the tension and discomfort.
Lycopodium: PMS with a craving for sweets and a ravenous appetite (sometimes a bulimic tendency) suggests a need for this remedy. Digestive upsets with abdominal bloating and flatulence are often seen, with the person feeling worst in the late afternoon and evening. Menstrual periods may be delayed, followed by a heavy flow that goes on for extra days. A woman who needs this remedy often wears a worried look and lacks self-confidence-although she may be irritable and bossy to pets and family members. A desire to be alone, but with someone in the other room, is another indication for Lycopodium

Any ideas what this could be before she starts the herbals/homeos?
I'm ANGRY that the (military) hospital is even THINKING of hysterectomy!! I want to help her get healthy, but I"m not very knowledgable...any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated!

Thank you MDC Friends!

Thanks JaneS!!
I just got this email from her: (do you think the PCOS tests could be 'wrong?')

They have ran tests for PCOS but they have come back within normal limits...well normal meaning not in the range they would be for PCOS. My insulin levels and thyroid are all normal. I was on the depo shot for one year from 1998 to 1999 but my problems started around probably 1994 or 1995 and within those 4 years or so I was on probably 5 different birth control pills that they tried to regulate my bleeding with. They just put me on birth control again and I took them for about a week but my bleeding got worse so I stopped them.

I'm not sure if the polyps have grown back or not but there is a big chance they would so that is why they will probably be doing another laparoscopy and hysteroscopy to check. They did these on me in November 2004 because I had such heavy bleeding and pain after my miscarriage and they removed them as well as some leftover placental tissue. The bleeding and clots I am having now remind me so much of my miscarriage. That is the only other time the pain and bleeding has been this bad. I am passing large clots almost every time I go to the bathroom.

I talked to the clinic today at 8:40 this morning and the stupid nurse I talked to basically said I was dumb because I am not used to the bleeding that I don't realize it could be this heavy. So I kept telling her this is NOT normal and she finally said she would see if they had any appointments open and she would call me back. Well she called back at 12:30 and said they had an appointment open at 1:00. WTH? As if she didn't know that 4 1/2 hours earlier??? So of course I couldn't go because I just laid Kaitlyn down and Lexi was eating lunch. So of course she acted like it obviously was not as bad as I was telling her and said "okay we will see you on Monday then". Of course she gave me the option to go to the ER but said they probably wouldn't do anything. And I am not going to go there if I absolutely do not have to.

As of Nov 04 I did not have endometriosis but the doctor I am seeing says that doesn't mean I don't have it now and that is another reason they will probably need to do the surgeries again. But if nothing shows up then of course a hysterectomy would be their easy solution to "fix me." Everything I read on the internet said that is the most common thing they do when you have unexplained bleeding as badly as I do. I just can't believe nothing shows up on my tests :-( This is NOT normal. I know that I need to lose a LOT of weight, but I know that is not the cause of this because when all this started I was only 160 lbs which isn't really "overweight" for my height. But just being on the depo for a year I gained 80 lbs!!! And I have never been able to lose it and then each month I am on clomid I gain about 5 lbs and I have been on that for about 11 months total. And this is all weight that never seems to leave.

Did your friend have the ultrasound done for PCOS or just the blood tests? Because I have PCOS and ALL my blood tests were normal. The only thing not normal was how my follicles were at a certain time of the month and that was detected by ultrasound.

Thanks Ophelia! I will make sure she knows that...not sure if they did the u/s or not...
Here is her most recent email...sorry this is so 'piecemeal!'

As bad as it sounds I would love a hysterectomy once we know we are done with kids only because I don't trust the doctors to "fix me" any other way as I have saw MANY doctors over the last 10 years and none of them have found anything wrong. And I am tired of having to deal with this crap. During the 7 years I didn't get a period on my own I would have to take Provera to force a period and that was almost as bad as this! I seriously cannot leave the house when I have my periods because they are sooo heavy. I hate having to put my life on hold and stay in the house because of a PERIOD!

I had some advice to tell her to try cloth pads (or in her case, diapers) and see if that works...could she be allergic to something in the paper pads/tampons?
She also told me this morning that every time she goes to the bathroom she is passing large clots...so she is going to the ER...
I'm just so sad for her...her hubby is in Iraq...she has 2 beautiful girls...but would like more babies...truely a 'mommy minded' person and a sweetheart to boot. I want her to feel better and get healthy. I appreciate everyone's input...every little bit helps!

Personally I think that "normal" test results can be very deceiving too ... especially if it's a military doctor, I've heard such nightmare stories about them in the past. This is a great link with all tests recommended and "normal" values somewhere at Soulcysters but I cannot find. One of my best friends dealt with this several years ago and I helped her research, she conceived twins on Clomid.

Also www.hystersisters.com is another awesome site that she might want to ask questions and research on.

Excess weight can mess with your hormones something bad... it holds onto to estrogen. And Depo is the devil, it just makes these problems 10x worse. Natural progesterone cream is a much better alternative. www.johnleemd.com

Also diet is a huge part of this syndrome. Insulin resistance means that higher amounts of insulin in the blood effects your hormones. If I'm remembering this correctly... high insulin is what actually interferes with FSH/LH hormone production. The egg develops but never pops, thus creating an ovarian cyst.

So if her diet is very high in simple carbs, and also omega 6 fatty acids from vegetable oils and trans fats which impede normal hormone production, that alone can be a large contributing factor.

PCOS is a clinical diagnosis, tests and ultrasound can only help to add to the diagnosis but will often be completely so they should not be relied upon. I would highly suggest that your friend ask about a trial of Metformin 500mg twice a day, started very slowly and worked up to the twice daily dosage. It will help to bring on ovulation and regulate her cycle.

As for her uterus being large ask her to read about adenomyosis and see if she feels the symptoms fit. It is more than likely the reason.

PS. Has she tried Vitex (chasteberry)?

I don't know if your friend got this figured out, but I thought I'd share my story...

I went through the same thing my whole life. I never had a regular period. I'd go to the doctors and they'd tell me it would straighten out. They'd give me birth control pills to help me have a regular period, but it didn't really solve the problem. It just masked the symptoms. They never told me the actual cause of my problem. When I did have a period, they were terrible and debilitating like your friend's. When I was 26 I had a period that lasted for five months straight. Yes, you read that right. Five months straight! I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with adenomyosis. Once again, the doctor prescribed birth control. She said the only way to help my problem was to get pregnant or have a hysterectomy. Neither one was an option for me!!!

So, I took matters into my own hands. I started reading about xenoestrogens, and how estrogen-mimicing chemicals in my foods, cosmetics, even plastics around me could be causing estrogen dominance syndrome...causing my pain, causing my irregularity.

So, I made a few changes in my life. Switched to an organic diet, got rid of every lotion, cream, or shampoo that wasn't 100% natural or organic and started taking natural progesterone cream.

The changes were amazing! I've lost 15 pounds in the process, my periods are MUCH more manageable, and I even had a period on my own! This time it lasted less than a week--which is unheard of for me! (Usually they last two weeks). I'm really happy with my results.

{Not to self-promote, but in the process, I created a company that makes 100% natural and organic bath and body products. It's my passion and I love it!}

Let me know how your friend is doing!
