I am a WAHM that also homeschools and I need some help. I am cosidering hiring a nanny (or possibly mother's helper) to help with my almost 1 yr old and my 9 year old. What is the going rate of pay in our area? Does anyone know?

It depends on where in Central Florida you are located, along with the type of nanny or mother's helper you hire. Those who make "nannying" a career, especially those who have certification in childcare, are going to charge a lot more than highschool or college kids who need extra money.

You may also consider joining a local parenting group to find a childcare co-op--which is basically where the mamas take turns watching each other's children.

Thanks for replying. I am in Orlando. Not sure if a parenting co-op will work since I essentially need someone to be in my home and entertain the kiddies downstairs while I work upstairs. I am very new to this since I have never even hired a babysitter so I am looking for any input I can get...

We pay our teenage babysitters about $9 per hr for the occasional night out. We used to pay $10 when the kids were younger because our sitter was a "special needs" teacher at his school and at least out of high school. When I ask them how much other people would pay them, they always said lower amounts. I figure if I pay a bit more than others, perhaps they will be more readily available the next time, and be a bit more responsible so they can come back! We don't go out often. I researched on line first and "technically" the average around here (Polk Co FL) for two kids is $11. That sounded a bit high to me. A local friend of mine used to watch my son when it was just him, and she would charge me $5. That said, I don't think a helper or babysitter with a regular gig should get paid as much as an "every-now-and-then" weekend babysitter. Our weekend babysitter is going to be coming every Monday to help out this summer. I will sometimes be here, but mostly be doing errands. I told her that I probably wouldn't be able to pay as much as I do for the occasional nights. I asked her how much her other summer helper job was paying (also two kids, but my little one is still in diapers) this summer and she said $8. She may have inflated that, since when I first met her, she told me she got like $5 for a helper job!
