Hello,
I would like to know if there's any way to test whether my body is more alkaline or acidic?

I would like to try for a daughter and don't want to have to go to my expensive natropath when I can monitor it myself...

Should I test the ph vaginally, or is it a whole body issue.

Cheers, Kimmy

What I have learned is that it is a whole body issue. The common tests are through your saliva or urine, but these 2 tests would not neccissarily tell you whats going on in your cells and tissues, where the acidity is most likely to cause problems. There is no real test to be truly accurate that you could do yourself...the best way to alkalise your body is to eat foods which are more alkalizing. You need 80% alkaline foods to 20% acid forming foods to make a real difference....a great way is to take fresh vegetable juices, like carrot and apple or romaine/apple/parsley or whatever combo you like....lots of salads, steamed vegetables, with apple cider vinnegar dressing, baked potatoes and sweet potatoes and a great alkalizing grain is millet. A great way is blended salads...sounds horrible but is really good for you...avocado, lettuce, tomato, green peppers, cucumber, celery, red cabbage and then add a little water and some garlic/lemon juice and blend it. You could also make a tabouli like salad with millet, it's absolutely yummy!

I have heared that people who battle to fall pregnant can do a vaginal douch with bicarb of soda solution, and that alkalizes the area enough to support conception, although this does not take into account the fact that the mom's body might need to be alkalized.

Hope this helps! And good on you to want to prepare your body for a baby! I think thats the most responsible thing a new mother can do.

The idea that eating alkaline foods like fruits and vegetables instead of acid foods (meat and whole grains) is better for health has been around since well before the 30s.

However, Weston Price, the nutrition researcher, found that most of the healthy cultures he studied ate a high-acid diet, and were perfectly healthy.

There were some that ate a high-alkaline diet, but Price found that it's the amount of minerals, vitamins, and fats in the diet of all these people that led to great health, not whether or not the foods were predominantly acid or alkaline.

"An important source of misapprehension is the literature and teachings of faddists. Such, for example, is the misapprehension of many people that they must use only alkaline producing foods and that a great danger is associated with the use of acid producing foods. In the primitive races I have found practically no difference between the acid balance meat diet of the isolated Eskimos of the far north and the less acid vegetable and milk diet of other groups as efficient factors in the control of caries. . . our bodies have a mechanism for maintaining proper acid and alkali balance in the blood and this varies through only a very narrow limit whether the balance of the total food eaten is acid or alkaline."

From Chapter 16, "Primitive control of dental caries" of Nutrition and Physical Degeneration.

He wrote a paper called "Acid-Base Balance of Diets Which Produce Immunity to Dental Caries Among the South Sea Islanders and Other Primitive Races"

"It is my belief that much harm has been done through the misconception that acidity and alkalinity were something apart from minerals and other elements. Many food faddists have undertaken to list foods on the basis of their acidity and alkalinity without the apparent understanding of the disturbances that are produced by, for example, condemning a food because it contains phosphoric acid, not appreciating that phosphorus can only be acid until it is neutralized by combining with a base.

An illustration of this is the following case: A girl was brought for assistance and study who still had her childhood face at sixteen years of age. There had been marked delay in physical develoment and function other than this growth factor. I was advised that the nutrition of this child had been very largely guided by the literature of the Defensive Diet League which, as one of its principal premises, has urged the keeping down of the acid-producing foods." (bolding mine).

It took a year of eating a better diet in order for her face and body to develop properly.
