The past few months I was noticing that my CPF's were already starting to look... well, worn. The oldest ones we were using I'd bought in late December and started using mid January. They were 4x8x4 infant bleached CPF's. We stopped using them in daily use probably May, when I put 12 up to eventually sell on eBay, gave a few to my mom, and kept a few for use in his pocket diapers. I figured it was just how they looked, even though I knew the few I was keeping would last for years.

A month or so later I was noticing my unbleached premium CPF's were starting to look worn as well.

Yesterday, the light caught one of the infant CPF's the right way and I noticed HOLES. Fairly large holes, at least in the top layer (couldn't really tell if any other layers were affected or not) and very worn spots in many other places. All of the 5 CPF's I have in regular rotation for the pocket diapers have some sort of almsot hole wear, with just one thankfully having flat out holes. I'm not looking forward to my unbleached ones develping the same in another month or so.

The holes/wear spots aren't where I attach the Snappi, they aren't where a cover could have gotten snagged on the fabric, and my washing machine hasn't destroyed any of our delicate clothes in the years of use, so I'm having a hard time believing that it could be it.

I use Cheer Free, but for a few weeks used All Free, Calgon goes in every rinse when I'm doing his Happy Heiny's in the same laod, and 3/4ths of the time they are hung to try outside instead of dried in the dryer. (I do do a fluff up 5 min run when they come in from outside) I've never used bleach on them (I used oxygen bleach on the infant ones once, but it's never been used on the unbleached ones).

We don't have majorly hard water, but right now, that's the only thing I can guess is causing holes in my CPFs. Right now the few awful prefolds my mom still has from when I was a baby look to be in better shape than mine do! Has anyone else dealt with CPF's that are falling apart?!

I have cpfs that are still 'hole-less' after being used on 4 children and through 3 1/2 years. So, I'm thinking that something must be going on here.

So, we've ruled out bleach (which was my #1 question)

Let's talk about things that cause 'undue stress' on our laundry.

1.) Do you overload your washing machine? As in, how many diapers/covers do you wash at once? You can have heavy wear on your diapers and covers when the washer is overloaded. It causes items to brush against each other and get caught on the agitator for extra 'wear' on the item just by being washed.

2.) Hard water. Clothes that are washed in hard water do have a tremendous amount more wear and tear than those that are washed the same way and for the same amount of time in soft water or water treated with a water softener. Continuous wash in hard water can damage fibers and seriously shorten the life of your diapers.

When you used the oxygen bleach, if the crystals fell on the fabric without being fully dissolved it might have weakend those areas.

And yes, hard water is the pits!! I've had a bad relationship with our hard water. Just spent 20 min. scrubbing our shower doors with Lime Away and *still* can see the hard water on the doors. UGH! The stuff corrodes over time, our drains are all corroded because of the water. Maybe it's eating your dipes, too. Do you use a wet or dry pail? Do you spray any stain removers on them?

I've been using Calgon to help with our hard water problem but nothing fully helps.

How are you drying them? Could it be your drier?

Are you washing them with anything with velcro that could be rubbing up agains them and causing the holes?

Is it possible that someone else might have washed them once and added bleach?

Hope you find out what's going on!

It sounds like it's the hard water causing problems.........
we have terribly hard water, and it seems like it destroys everything it touches! Yukky stuff.

Thanks for everyones input. I meant to get back to this last week but I've been so busy I haven't had a chance to post.

I do laundry every day or every day and a half, so the most that goes in at a time is 15 diapers and usually two covers. We have an extra large capacity washer and I always set the water level to high (although I have done it on medium a few times when I just did laundry the day before). I can't do too large of a load or we'd run out of diapers and the poor clothesline would break.

For the first four months or so of using the infant CPF's I dried them on a regular low setting, but it was taking 3 full cycles to dry them, so when it's rainy and I dry in the dryer, I do it on the cotton/high setting for a cycle and a half. When they are dried on the line, I just do about a 5 minute high setting run to fluff them up and get the one or two doublers I do fully dry.

All of the covers with velcro are attached to the wash tabs when I take them off so I can't imagine anything would have happened because of them.

The one oxygen bleach time I'd disolved it (I thought) in water and then put the diapers in, but, that wouldn't explain the holes forming in the unbleached premium sized ones, since I haven't used it on those. Likewise, I'm the only one who has ever actually washed them - my MIL ruined a Bumkins AIO the one time she had a chance to touch anything, but that was at her house and she had no access to any of my CPF's.

Some look at lot worse than the others, which I don't get, as they've all been washed just about the same number of times.

I so wish we had room and money for a full house water softner.
