I thought I'd share some research I've done on adaptive bikes. I've found several online, and in Abilitations, but the prices on them are outrageous. Then I heard a story on NPR about worksman bikes. They're made in the US, incredibly long-lasting, and they make a lot of adaptive bikes. Plus they custom-build bikes, so you can have things like arm rests, weighted pedals, pedal straps, captain chairs, etc. put onto bikes. Here are a few models I thought might be of interest to everyone (these are the basic bikes...if you look below at the options you can see how to make them more adaptive):

We're thinking of getting one of the tandem tricycles for ds1, and adding on a back-supporting seat, pedals and straps, and possibly even a footrest for him. I never thought we'd find a way to take our big almost-7

Thanks for the idea. I think that would be great, but we can't guarantee ds1 will be willing to hold on to the handlebars without any sort of back support. I'm looking still for an adaptive add-on bike seat...has anyone seen or used one?

Oh...and I found another cool company called buddy bike. If you do a search for "adaptive buddy bike" you'll find it. It's a tandem bike, but the kid sits in front and the adult is in control of steering.

I think we're going to end up going with the Worksman side-by-side. It has a captain's chair, arm rests, weighted pedals and foot straps, a seat belt, and independent drives so one person can choose to pedal or not. And it is BY FAR the cheapest/most well-made adaptive side-by-side I've seen out there. I'm so excited!!!!

Probably NOT the purple and yellow combo they have going on in the photo. I dunno...what do you think would look good? Probably just one color, but I'm not sure which one to go with....

I'd probably go with the safety orange, but I have a weird thing about orange. The electric blue would be cool. Does he have a favorite color? If so, go for that one for sure!
