I have been reading in the health and healing board but this question is specific to babies so I hope this is the right forum...

My 9 mo DD is taking antibiotics for an ear infection and some expectorant for bronchitis. Normally, I wouldn't be giving her either of these, but she is not a happy girl and we are travelling abroad. I don't want to risk a prolonged illness and I trust the doctor who prescribed them.

She spits out the meds. Any advice?

I want to give her probiotics too, but she doesn't normally drink from a bottle and it says to mix it with my milk.

Advice?

I don't have any GD-friendly advice, but the ONLY thing that would work for my kids is hooking my finger inside their cheek, and kind of gently pulling their check out while syringing in the meds. It prevents them from spitting it back up. And try just giving her the probiotics in a spoon dry- my baby for some reason loved it like that.

This is always what we've done. My kids don't do bottles or pacis so we've had to resort to this when they are babies/toddlers.

If we give ds2 any medication using a plunger type syringe he spits it out. One time we tried a squeeze (you know with the bulb on the end) syringe and he loved it. He liked the sucking feeling when I released the bulb on his tongue, lips, etc... Weird

The plunger type syringe, or an eyedropper type, with the baby held sideways. The medicine is inserted so that it goes way back in the downhill cheek. With the medicine landing way back there the kid has to swallow before they can yell in protest. It's not very fun, but when necessary it's what we do.

When ds2 had pneumonia we had to hold his arms to his side and put him in a head lock pretty much
, and drip the medicine into his mouth VERY slowly (he would throw all of it up otherwise) It wasn't fun and I hated doing it, but it was the only way we could get him to take it. He also ended up getting a shot of antibiotics in the butt because he would throw up his medicine.

I always thought you were supposed to squirt the medicine in the mouth in one go, but at hospital recently they put it in with lots of small squirts (in the side of the mouth) getting the baby to swallow inbetween. It worked better. To get baby to swallow, try holding the mouth shut and stroking the neck gently (like you do with a cat!). It does work.

I give our baby digestive enzyme and probiotics mixed in a tish of water and put it in a plastic syringe....he still hates the taste of the stuff but he's used to it and knows he gets to nurse afterwards. He loves to hold the syringe and bite on it too...I just have to remind him to "suckie suckie" so he'll actually swollow it. he thinks it's funny when I say "suckie suckie"...I also try to always smile so he doesn't think it's a bad thing...I tell him "it's yummy..no...but it's good for you"....he thinks it's kinda funny even though it tastes gross. if i'm way to tired to mix it up I tell him I'm gonna give it to him "dry" and he opens his mouth for it. he still doesn't love it but he knows the deal. i'm just consistent in what I tell him so he knows what's going on and he wants to please me. good luck...hope u finds what works for you and baby.

edit: just for the record...I never let him hold the syringe w/out me holding it too (choking hazard). and I only let him bite it for a bit..he knows it's not a toy..then after I tell him "mommy has to go wash it, but I'll be right back"

That's how I give my boys medicine except I use the pacifier to get them to swallow.
