Hi there, man I need some insight on my situation! This is kinda long so my apoligies. My lmp was Aug 25, my cycle is generally between 28 & 30 days. Took first response hpt, 2 days before AF was due, came back neg. Took reg hpt 2 days after missed, neg at first but then brought it out of bathroom with better light and had a VERY faint line, but 10 min later. Next day, took another first response one (supposedly more sens) and sure enough, positive!! So that was on Sept 26. Saw my doc but she didnt' do a blood test. I had terrible morning sickness, she prescribed Diclectin as I had actually lost 7 lbs from the vomitting. Anyway, last friday I seemed to loose the signs of morning sickness (so over a week now) on sunday I no longer had breast tenderness. Went to the hosp on tues night cause I just couldnt' shake the feeling something was wrong. He did a beta and it was only at 319. Ultrasound the next morning said they saw nothing and looked like I was about to get a period. Went the following day (thurs) to my own doc, she reordered the beta hcg and did another u/s, again they saw nothing on u/s but now the beta was 331. I was told that could just be a difference in labs and that the u/s coupled with low beta and loss of symptoms, for sure impending m/c and the baby had likely died on the friday before. So in my sadness I started to bleed friday afternoon. By friday night (middle of) I was in AGONY, was dizzy and weak. My dh took me to emerg at the hospital where my doc is, so that the most recent u/s and bloods would be on file. When I arrived my blood pressure was 94/42, they started me on fluids adn did a blood type as they thought I may need a transfusion (even though I never bled heavily) She did an exam, said the cervix was still closed, she ordered more blood, but from the prior results everyone assumed I was now expelling this dead baby. I was put on demerol which helped. The doc comes back 2 hrs later and says she doesn't know how to explain it but now my beta is 434. They all still think I had a miscarriage, they did another u/s and still itshowed nothing. The radioligist is convinced perhaps I ovulate late in my cycle making the pregnancy only a couple weeks post conception at which point it would be too early to see anything. So here are my questions
1, Has anyone had a m/c while their beta levels where rising?
2, Can my baby possibly be dead and my levels still go up?
3, Does it make sense that these preg symptoms left if everything is alright.
Any opinions would be welcome, I'm so confused, the ob at the hosp wanted to a D&C but I refused based on the beta levels, am I just being silly??
I hope if everything is alright that the demerol they gave me and the gravol won't hurt the little one.

I wouldn' t have the d&c either! Not with rising beta levels!
It's too early for drugs you took now to affect the baby, placenta hasn't formed yet.
FWIW - they never saw my first on u/s until about 12 weeks (after LMP - I do have long cycles, too) because I have a tilted uterus.
It's gonna be tough, but try to wait it out. Things will become clear in time. Best of luck, and best of wishes for you!!

Thanks, that helps alot hearing they couldn't see your son until 12 weeks. Could they see anything at all, they told me I looked like I'd get my period any day--so naturally when the bleeding started, I was convinced I was having a m/c. I know it's a shot in the dark, but I want it so bad and the fact that none of them seemed to know what to make of the rising beta level--other than it wasn't rising proplerly (doubling). I tell you I've never been the religious type but have found myself praying the last few days. I am still having mild cramping and some bleeding. The wait is KILLING me! I almost want to go back into the hospital so they will do another blood level.

Maybe you have an ectopic pregnancy?
When I was pg in January I had slowly rising numbers and spotting(very light period) at 6-7 wks. It was an ectopic pg.
They saw nothing on the u/s. Told me the baby was in one of my tubes.
I don't mean to be a downer.

It really sucks not knowing. I was on vacation when I started to bleed and had no idea why and going crazy waiting to go home so I could et to the drs.

does anyone know wether u/s can actually rule out ectopic preg at around 6 weeks? I just feel so weird. Believe it or not, I have actually gained 3 lbs since discovering "I am no longer really pregnant" Odd since I have eaten almost nothing since that dr.s appt on thurs. I'm not sure what I need, I feel so alone and confused. My dh is wonderful but he has no idea what to say or how I really feel

Just wanted to offer you some support....I am also going thru an am-I-pregnant-still thing (see my post at Pregnancy and Birth Loss for more specific info if you want.) and it so so emotionally difficult. I'm a mess.
From what I have read, your hcg levels can rise a bit even if the pregnancy isn't viable. But I understand your trepidation about the D and C...are you willing to wait and just have a natural miscarriage, (or possibly a pregnancy) because that seems like the least risky thing to do...
Feel free to PM me if you wanna talk a little bit.

When I had my ultrasound I remember the tsch saying "theres nothing there" But she did also say something about what lloked liek a cyst on my ovary(?) which happens/can happen when pg.
I know I saw nothing and with the numbers the way they were I chose to believe when they told me that the baby was in my tube.
I didn't want anyone doing anything intrusive to me to confirm it.
I chose to take a shot(2 actually) of methotrexate rather than do the d&c.

I miscarried with a blighted ovum several years ago and my levels did continue rising. I knew something was wrong and basically told the Dr that when the 3rd blood test showed higher levels and they finally did an US that showed just the cell mass. My body just hadn't figured out that there wasn't anymore growth.

If you aren't sure, I would wait, because your body will figure it out and if you start bleeding more, you can do a D&C than if you choos, or you can just let your body take care of it.

I hope it's just that the US is not showing up and that you have a happy outcome

well, I'm willing to wait it out, at this point lets face it, I am still bleeding lightly, so if the pregnancy is non viable then I'm likely loosing it as I type. If blood work that will be done tues still has the beta level rising, then I don't know what to do. I have looked back and I suppose if I ovulated just before my period was due I could only be 4 weeks, thus making a beta of 454 semi-normal. The problem is I conceived on the pill, I had been sick adn they figured I'd likely vomitted a couple doses, so when I think back now, everything they are basing the opinion of low beta and that they should be able to see something at this stage, is based on my ovulating on the 14th day. I shouldnt' have ovulated at all, so what are the chances I ovulated that early?? AAARRRRGGGHHHH!!
I just so wish that tomorrow (monday) was not a holilday here, I will feel more settled when I get blood tests back, unfortunately I've only had the 3 betas done and they were all just a day apart, but lets face it, in 2 1/2 days, they went from 319 to 454. I guess alot of what they are basing their concerns on however is my sudden loss of preg symptoms. Anyway, keep the responses coming, it makes me feel like I'm not alone

I just wanted to point out one thing that might be pertinent to your situation...a bit...

Not all vomiting and sickness that happens around the time of early pregnancy is morning sickness...it could very well be that you had some other short lived bug in your system that made you horribly sick, and that it wasn't morning sickenss. That would explain why that symptom went away, anyway. I think it would be really unusual to have severe morning sickness at 4 weeks from lmp, usually that only starts at 5-6 weeks anyway.

There are so many things to consider in your situation...

If the bleeding continues, and you test in a few days and find your numbers down, then you are perhaps having a natural miscarriage.

If it was an ectopic pregnancy, (though I don't know this for sure) I don't know why a D&C would help as that only involves removing tissue from the uterus.

Some bleeding is normal in early pregnancy, some women implant at unusual times (although it's highly unusual to get more than a super super faint positive earlier than 10dpo, and that's usually a sensative test).

FWIW, we had an ultrasound at 4 weeks from lmp with my first (but gestational age more like 2.5 weeks) and saw nothing, it took two more weeks before we saw a sac and heartbeat, but many things can effect this. And it would definitely have to be a transvaginal ultrasound, rather than an abdominal, to find anything in really early pregnancy.

Good luck, and hope that you ride through this confusion. Please let us know if you need any more support!

well, I've gone over my numbers and dates again, and you know, the day I assumed my period would come, I tested neg--even with a super sens test, it wasn't until thurs (4 days later that I was able to get a pos result. (again with the first response) so when I look at it, if I was only 10 days p.o. then I'm not that far along. I am SOOO hopefull that tomorrow will bring some good news.

I just wanted to point out that if you concieved while on the pill it can alter when you ovulate and concieve. With my ds I concieved on Halloween, only 2 days after the end of my period. I was on the pill at the time, and no one is certain how I managed to concieve at all. Five months ago I had severe abdominal pain and had to go to the Dr. She sent me to the emergency room to have a transvaginal ultrasound to rule out the possibility of a tubal pregnancy. Luckily it was only a ovarian cyst which while painful is benign and finally went away about a week later. I asked why I needed a transvaginal ultrasound and was told it was the only way to see the tubal pregnancy, or almost any pregnancy that early on. I didn't think I was pregnant at all since we were using condoms, but there is only one way to know for sure. Obviously condoms aren't fool proof cause I am now 12 weeks pregnant. I am excited to be having a little one, but hopefully after this time we will be able to come up with a birth control method that actually works for us. I want to wait at least three or four years before haveing a third. Just know you arent in this alone.

Thanks, I'm so hoping this is a bad dating thing. Actually today I began having breast tenderness again. Course maybe it's in my head
: My poor dh is just so sad, he doesn't seem to want to talk about it, I think he doesn't want to burden me, so he's just been working overtime. He's so hopeful but doesnt' want to give me false hope and really doesn't understand the physical part of it. I shouldn't say that, the poor guy while I was in the hospital, after the exam which was horribly painful, I looked at him with tears rolling down my face and he reponds with "We're never having sex again are we??" At least he made me laugh

Thanks for all the support and good (and bad) scenarios. I will let everyone know tomorrow what the news is.

Well the news is bad, the hcg level this morning was only 383, so it looks like friday night was indeed a miscarriage. I can't believe how devastated I am right now, I knew the chances of everything being alright were slim but it's hitting me harder this time than it did when they first told me it wasn't viable. I can't stop crying
All I can think about is trying again. Does anyone know, will you ovulate when your hcg is still elavated? How long does it take to have a period after miscarriage? Maybe looking to the future will help me get through the last couple weeks.
Thanks for all your support,

Hi Shannon!
I am so sprry for your loss. I know its very hard and with it being so fresh dosesnt make it easier. Most drs and midwives tell you to wait at least 3 cycles. This way you have just as much chance to miscarry as any other women. Meaning that if you get pregnant right away you are at a much higher risk of having another miscarriage. Your body needs time to heal and adjust to all the changes. PLease someone if you have other info please feel free to add because I want her ot have the best advice there it.
Let your body heal and you greive. When I lost my baby in April it was very hard. I then was pregnant IN july! And everything is going well. So it can happen for you to. I am so sorry for your loss. I truley am.
