DD just got a wonderful hand-me-down wood barn to play with. It didn't come with any animals so I'm looking for recommendations. I love the Ostheimer animals but they are SO expensive! Does anybody know of any more affordable brands? Thanks!

Maukilo is having a 25% off sale on Holztiger that may be worth checking out.<br><br><a href="http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs054/1011018454991/archive/1102766947139.html" target="_blank">http://archive.constantcontact.com/f...766947139.html</a>

If you like Anamalz, you can get them for over half off here, but just for today:<br><a href="http://www.mamabargains.com/" target="_blank">http://www.mamabargains.com/</a><br><br>
Hurry - they are going faaaast! The sold out ones are mostly zoo animals, the ones left are barn animals. I love the pig. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile">

We have some of the Anamalz as well, they are really cute. Also, definitely check out Etsy, there are some great homemade options on there.

I am kicking myself for not bookmarking it at the time, but someone posted an etsy shop that had hand-carved animals that looked JUST like Buntschpecht (yeah, Im sure the spelling is wrong, lol). I went through our archives and cannot find it! Anyone remember which store it was? I searched etsy Waldorf:Animals but did not find it <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/greensad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="greensad"><br><br>
I bit the bullet and went Ostheimer. I only got a few figures and will only buy a few at a time. They are v lovely and have held up well (we have the lion family). I dont think the Animalz are super durable. Our friends have some & the cow's udder is now missing a teat and the gorilla's head fell off <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/oops.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="oops">

Do you mean the Jalu ones?<br><br><a href="http://www.jalutoys.com/inside.htm" target="_blank">http://www.jalutoys.com/inside.htm</a><br><br>
They have an etsy shop too. We have a rainbow stacker from them and love it! I want to get some animals from them as well, but I think it's a "next year" thing for us at the moment. They are gorgeous though.

Gunter, we haven't had any issues with our anamalz but my son doesn't use them a ton either and we've only had them 9 mos or so. I'm guessing they will eventually endure the same fate. We don't have any Ostheimer so I can't comment on those.<br><br>
We do have a couple of Holztiger animals (in "the box" reserved for some future gifting) and they seem lovely. I still love the handmade ones so much more, however. I'm really fond of Mamakopp on Etsy. She does beautiful work!

Is that rainbow stacker (Jalu toys)more durable than the Grimm Spiel and Holz one? We have a small nesting fire stacker and the wood seems really thin. We've already broken one piece of it.

I haven't seen the Grimm Spiel and Holz one in person, but the Jalu one does seem really sturdy. When we got it I was a little worried but we've had it for a year and it's just like new. I have a 15 month and a 3 year old boy who play with it daily, I've been really impressed with it's durability.

Zooloonaturals if you like the look of Buntshpect.<br><br>
Jalu does awesome stackers. We have all four elements from them and they've received a lot of wear. When one of them cracked they replaced the entire stacking to for us for free. I have their huge nativity set too - which I don't let DS play with because two of the 4 sheep from a barnyard set I purchased from them didn't fair as well - and chipped off at the corners of the feet. Their animals don't feel quite as substantial to me as other animals, but they ARE beautiful. I would be so sad if my Nativity was ruined.<br><br>
Our Holztiger have held up really well.<br><br><br>
I ---er....my son has toys from Imagination Kids that have held up well also.<br><br><br>
PS...you can see photos of the Jalu stackers on my blog a few posts back.

We've had our mamakopp and mamaroots pieces for almost a year and my son and his friends are very rough. So far they have all held up well. Our holztiger though have not, we've had one pig loose an ear and a dinosaur loose his head!!
