How do you tell people your toddlers age when they are under 2? Do you say "Just over a year." or "14 months." what about after a year and a half? Is it "Just over a year-and-a-half." or "19 months."

Just wondering. James is 18 months and if people ask his age and I say "18 months." they'll say "Oh, so he's a year and a half." and before it was "Oh, almost a year and a half then." pretty soon it will be "Almost 2 then!"

What do you say?

I guess to me, there is a big difference between my son and a 1 y/o. And there is a big difference between my son and a 2 y/o so I want to specify that he's right in the middle...and months is easier. LOL

On the toddler forum (
) I almost always use months. I just find it to be more helpful, in general, knowing WHERE in "two" a two-year-old is when we're talking about behavior, language, naps, etc.

Elsewhere, I found myself saying "She was two in March" a lot this year. I guess soon I'll be saying "two and a half" or "almost two and a half." When she was one, I did the same thing. I typically gave her age in months, but sometimes I'd say "She'll be two in March," or "she's not quite two," or "she's almost 18 months," or "she had her first birthday in March." Something like that, if I didn't think the person asking would be a parent tuned into the months.

To many people, particularly moms with babes, I say 19 months. When it really, really won't mean a thing-- I say a year and a half. And I get that question a lot, considering the despairity (sp?) of my daughter being smaller than most 1 year olds, yet walking and talking like a 2 year old! LOL! Women always want to know "How old is that munchkin?!?!"
