Holy Crap! That thing was huuuge! I live near there and I would be terrified if I saw that thing coming at me. That being said though, I don't see what an accomplishment it is to have killed the thing. It's sick how people can get so much pleasure out of killing innocent creatures.

One of the things that bothered me was when the article said that he had killed a deer at age 5.... <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/img/vbsmilies/smilies/dizzy.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Dizzy">:<br><br>
I'm sorry, but my dd will be 4 this summer. To think that she would hunt and kill a deer at age 5 is too much for me. I understand that once upon a time it was a survival item, but now? I'm not into hunting merely for sport...<br><br>
Also this part bothered me, "He [Jamison, 11 yo] said he shot the huge animal eight times with a .50-caliber revolver and chased it for three hours through hilly woods before finishing it off with a point-blank shot."<br><br>
also<br><br>
"His father said that, just to be extra safe, he and the guides had high-powered rifles aimed and ready to fire in case the beast with 5-inch tusks decided to charge."<br><br>
8 times!!!?!! Okay, they obviously tracked and hunted this animal to kill it. But this boy is only 11 yo! <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/greensad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="greensad"> The comments posted on their website are :puke Hmm, and school wide schooling are now prevalent because....<br><br>
This site shows the pig, the gun used, and some other useless info: <a href="http://www.monsterpig.com/" target="_blank">http://www.monsterpig.com/</a><br><br>
Just awful. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/shake.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="shake">

I live in the south and as much as a lot of folks dislike hunting it is a way of life here. I can't do it myself but my husband goes hunting most years. He grew up in the rural south and it is REALLY a large part of life and growing up in the south. I do however harass him about hunting Bambi and I won't cook it unless it looks like it was just purchased at Publix.

<img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/img/vbsmilies/smilies/dizzy.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Dizzy">: Wow. I dont' think I'd want my 11 year old traipsing through the woods after a pig that big. Of course I wouldn't let my 5 year old kill a deer either (let alone touch a gun), but I'm weird like that <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/winky.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Wink"> .

That bothered me too. I'd much rather see it alive and doing what it did to live. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/img/vbsmilies/smilies/gloomy.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Gloomy">:

THat's what I was going to say.<br><br>
You know what, at least they are using it for food. I know of so many people who are trophy hunters and would've just left the meat for other animals to eat and took the head to be mounted. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/img/vbsmilies/smilies/gloomy.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Gloomy">:

Well, I'm going to say it: I think that story is awful, top to bottom. From stalking and killing an animal on a "commercial hunting preserve," to the fact that the hunter was a child, to the fact that they had guides with them with rifles, et cetera - it's not as though they were hunting for food to survive, this was killing for fun. I don't know what kind of thinking goes into teaching a child to chase down a defenseless animal and shoot it with a handgun over and over again. And the fact that this kid killed his first animal at age five - sickening. I read this story and literally felt nauseous.

Really? It's sick and disgusting that he killed a deer at the age of 5?

Yes, without a doubt. What possible purpose is there in encouraging a child that age to kill an animal? Is he starving? Does he live in the wilderness?

So if a family at NO farmed meat at all...ONLY wild meat that the family gets. Would it be disgusting?

Wild meat is so much healthier to eat. The animal is eating what it's supposed to so it's healthier, and it got to live the way it's supposed to before dying as well. I think it's much more humane than large scale factory farming.

I have a very difficult time understanding why such a family would place a gun in a kindergartener's hand and ask him to go out and kill an animal to provide food for the family - isn't that the job of the adults in this scenario? I'm not totally anti-hunting, but I think this kind of killing for sport (in a commercial preserve, high-powered weapons, etc) is sick. If a family is hunting ethically for food, with some integrity and respect for the animals they are taking (i.e. not taking such an obscenely unfair advantage over the animal), then I think it's probably more ethical than eating meat from a factory farm. However, this story is just wrong all the way around.

Oh I agree. Factory farmed, shooting an animal 8 times, tracking for 3 hours. That's horrible.

For the same reason I taught my children to do their laundry and other basic housekeeping skills. You bring your children up to have the necessary skills for life. If we hunted as our primary meat source our children would be hunting as soon as we felt they were mature enough to understand gun safety. If he had to hunt to eat meat our son would be vegetarian, but my daughter could totally stare down Bambi and pull the trigger. It doesn't bother her at all to help great grandma kill and butcher the chickens on the ranch.

Once you shoot an animal you have to finish it off. It would be even more cruel to let it slowly bleed out somewhere. It does sadden me that they had this young man doing this with a handgun. That's very inappropriate. He should have been taken down as painlessly as possible with a rifle.
