My son was sensitive to dairy & corn as an infant. He is now 13 months. I am still breastfeeding, and it seems like every time he breastfeeds he turns bright red. He has an eczema patch on his cheek that will not go away and a rash around his mouth. So I took him in for an allergy test, and tested him for food allergies for everything I could possibly imagine (nuts, soy, the works). Nothing! The allergist said he was allergic to *nothing* and could be started on dairy. So I have started consuming dairy again myself and he is breaking out worse than ever. My dp blames my milk, he says there must be something wrong with it and that "obviously" ds is allergic to breastmilk.

Does anyone have any ideas/tips/advice? If it helps, usually ds eats what we eat only in smaller portions--usually organic.

allergy testing is highly innacurate in children under 5, not to mention they do not detect intolerances. my son is intolerant to milk protein, soy protein, wheat/gluten. he was negative for all allergy testing. too bad most doctors act like there is no such things as intolerances....trust me, there is. your doc is full of it...i would stop all dairy. he is not allergic to your bm, its something you are eating, going into your bm. some docs are seriously

Like PP said, allergy testing is not 100% accurate. Even though the tests say he does not have allergies, he is having an allergic reaction. And any good allergist will tell you that the presence of a reaction tops the test results.

I would suggest keeping a food diary (for DS and yourself since you are BF) and document his reactions in there. Since it seems clear that he is allergic to dairy, totally cut it out of his diet and yours. Every exposure to an allergen increases the likelihood the reaction will get worse.

My DS is allergic to dairy and eggs, and I have found the FAAN website to be a good source of info.

Although it is also not 100%, what about kinesiology? Ours could tell that we were intolerant to wheat. And even more specific-our liver, upper and lower intestine and stomach were 'shutting down' fromthe wheat. Our (me, ds, dd)lower intestine was affected by corn chips but not corn kernels. That sort of thing. Our chiropractor is our kinesiologist.
Definitely, though, eliminating it for several weeks, then bringing it back is the best way-although that isnot 100% either.
No matter what, support digestion with a high quality probiotic.

With that kind of reaction, I would try doing the 2 week starvation allergy test (where you eat only pork, pears, sweat potatoes and rice). In 2 weeks he should be looking much better if it is food.

It could also be environmental allergies or perhaps he isn't breathing very well while nursing and therefor turns red? I am not sure, just throwing out ideas for you.

ANd YES, a reaction ALWAYS trumps testing results!! Only 80% of allergies show up on the test.

My dd was allergic to dairy, even the slightest amount. Her doctor did a blood test that came back totally negative, but she also advised me that even if the test is negative, there could be an allergy. We had to remove dairy completely from her diet, I stalked the kosher aisle at the grocery store.

If you're not quite ready to do a starvation try, you could keep a food diary and see what you eat most frequently and start by doing an elimination challenge to see if you can figure out what triggers it. Wheat and dairy are common offenders, but there are tons of others as well. Corn Syrup is another issue for my dd.

You may find the Health & Healing forum and allergy etc. subforum helpful as well. Especially go up to the sticky section where you can read and go to lots of informative links on allergies.

I eliminated wheat, diary, rice, chicken, citrus & peanuts for over a year now due to ds reacting to my bm. i've only just found that now after 1 yr of not eating chicken I can eat it occasionally with no reaction in ds.

My little one reacted to dairy not only with screaming but eczema. Once I eliminated dairy the eczema went away and so did the screaming. He did see an allergist and had the skin prick test and I was told he was not allergic to dairy. But they also said since he is reacting to it, stop the dairy. In his case we reintroduced it into my diet and then his at around a year with no more eczema or issues. Meanwhile my older son had eczema which we narrowed down to dust mites. We treated for dustmites and the eczema went away.
