What do you all do about allowance?

We've decided that ds needs to start getting some sort of money. I think that allowance should come with no strings, except a requirement on saving (half??). Dh thinks allowance should tie into chores. I think that chores are just part of living in our house and there shouldn't be a bonus for participating in family chores.

So what do all you mamas do, we need advice

Everything I have ever read says that you should NOT tie allowance to chores for a number of reasons.

1) Because chores are a part of life, money or no, that you have to do. Part of being in a family and having a home.

2) Because an allowance should be used to teach about money which needs to be done if they do their chores or not.

3) Attaching chores to allowance says "YOu don't have to do chores IF you don't want your allowance." As kids get older and have other sources of income, chances are good they'll say "Nah, I don't need the money."

Also important for *our* family is--- I am a SAHP and *I* get money without "earning" it because it is our families money. We treat our kids the same.

my daughter, 8 gets an allowance without any strings to it.She does not have to save if she doesn't want to.What's the point of forced savings?

However, she gets 4 $ more every month if she continues to help whenever she can.If she doesn't, she only gets the basic allowance.

basic allowance is 1$ a week, extra allowance 4$ a month.

Our kids get allowance unrelated to chores. It's a large allowance and they are expected to do three things each month with it - save some, spend some, give some. (well, they don't HAVE to spend :)

We used to give weekly, but it's a lot easier to plan with them if it's monthly, so that's how we do it. They get $25/month. They usually give at least $5 of it.

We've been really loving the kids' program with Heifer International but the kids can choose to give their money to any worthwhile group. (http://www.heifer.org)
