help me pick between:

Ailish Roan

Eilish Luella (the E goes nice w/ the E in Luella, i think) or

Charlotte Luella

reasoning:

my father's name is Charles Louis (for which i'm also named, C----- Louise) hence the Charlotte (nn Charli) and Luella (variation of Louis) and Roan because i love the way its gender neutral quality balances the femininity of Ailish. it's also Irish Gaelic, as is Ailish. (i'm Irish). not a huge fan of Charlotte, but i'd love to honor my father, and the kids and hubby like it best.

am i boring anyone yet? this is tough!

My DD is a Charlotte...but I really love Ailish Roan. Especially when it's pronounced correctly (I'm Irish too )

DDC crashing. I like Ellish Luella...just because I do. It's a pretty name. Good luck deciding.

Eilish Luella is my favourite by far. They're both such nice names and lovely together. Good luck making the final decision!

I like Ailish Roan a lot.

Responding to an earlier post, I am under the impression that Ailish is pronounced fairly phonetically "eye-lish."

A similar name that gets mispronounced all the time is Aislin, which according to traditional pronounciation should be "Ash-leen." However, I like the phonetic pronounciation of Aislin; I think it's pretty.

I would pronounce it with a longer "eye" sound. Kinda like "isle-ish" but a shorter, softer "isle" sound. Halfway between "eye" and "isle"...hard to explain. But that could be because of my NZ accent? Or I could totally be wrong

melly, yup, that's exactly it. (you explained that so well. ) you could say Ay-lish, too i think, unless of course we went w/ the Eilish spelling.

sheashea, funny, my hubby started this whole irish name idea w/ his preference for Aislin. we both preferred the phonetic pronunciation of it too but i just couldn't get past people having "issues" w/ "mispronouncing" it, so we let it go.

wish i could do Ailish Roan Luella but that sounds pretty ridiculous, lol. i'm having a really tough time letting go of one.

Ok, this is a bit of a tough one. I definitely like the sound and look of Ailish Roan. On the other hand, I think Ailish is more likely to be mispronounced, since people might be inclined to say the first syllable like the word "ail" (meaning sick, which is also a negative for me). Additionally, I've never heard of Roan as anything other than a masculine name, so I don't see it as "gender neutral" at all, and I typically dislike male names on girls. On the other hand, it's a middle name, so the cross gender thing doesn't bother me as much there.

So, my vote would be Eilish Luella, or Eilish Roan. I think Eilish is more likely to be pronounced correctly, because the first syllable is spelled and said the same way as Eileen, a more familiar Irish name.

I think Charlotte Luella is a lovely, charming, pretty, sweet, and old-fashioned sounding name, but it doesn't sound like YOU love it, so that's why I didn't vote for it. Of your choices, it's the one I'd be most likely to use for my own kid, but I think you really need to go with what you love.
