Alternative to Kissaluv Size 0 for newborn?

(My first post!
)

Babe #1 is expected in September, and I really want to give cloth diapering a go. I've had some panicing and 2nd guessing, so I've decided my best course of action is to get some dipes and then I'll have no choice!

From reading, I've come to a conclusion that fitteds and covers are a good choice for NBs and the runny BM poos.

I thought I was just going to order 25 or so kissaluv size 0 and some covers, but then I've seen a lot of posts saying the absorbency isn't all that great.

What are some good alternatives? Or what are your suggestions?

I'm looking to spend not much more than $10 a dipe and I'd like something I can actually order! I saw a great review of the KHW newborn dipe, but can't get my hands on any of those.

I could still go with the Kissaluvs, but if there's something better, I want to go with that! I know the better it is working/easier it is, the more likely we will stick with it!

I kept hearing how awful Kissaluvs were too and when I got them, I didn't think I'd like them much. But I've got to say that I like them better than I thought I would. My ds soaks everything, so any diaper feels like a sopping dishrag in 20-30 minutes, it doesn't matter if it's a Kissaluv or a Bizzy B Hive hemp fitted. The most absorbant I've found are Kindhearted Women and Elbee x-smalls. But small diapers work better for us overall than newborn diapers, because they offer more coverage and more fabric to absorb the pee more. My son was 9 lbs 8 0zs though.

Does www.granolamoms.com have any nb KHW's instock? You might find some on the TP before your September duedate.
I really like nanipoos. (I left a review on them). AND, she has been offering some great deals. I don't think you can pick prints, but she will send you girly, boy, or gn, whichever you prefer. They have an umbilical cord dip, and are snapping. I like them ALOT! I have also tried, khw, fcb 0, kissaluvs, baby luv, and valor kids. (I heard another mama even got hers with velour inside- YUMMY!). I think kissaluvs work okay- they sure aren't as pretty though, I bought some for my last baby because he was unexpected, and they are ALWAYS instock somewhere... Plus, the resell value is high. If I were you, though, I would start putting in some more posts here (you have to have 50 to participate), and then check out the trading post. You can get lots of diapers there for less than retail prices- plus you can find a variety! Also check out www.orangestarfish.com I bought lots of newborn dipes from her the first go around. Have fun!
I second nanipoos they were my Dh faves.

I don't have any advice, but just to say i'm glad you started this thread. I started CDing when DS was 4 months old...so i missed all the newborn diapering stuff. We are sorta planning our next one (off in the distant future somewhere) and i'd like to know what works best for newborns. Maybe if i start planning now, i can buy a diaper or two every month and get the good stuff that is a little more pricey but well worth it KWIM?

Thanks for your replies!

nicandboys, So the kissaluvs don't seem too bad for you? I'll probably get at least some of my stash in those since they are so available. I already checked Granola Moms for the KHW, but no luck.
I will keep checking around though, since I still have a few months!

Do you consider the kissaluvs size 0 to be a newborn or a small dipe? I have no idea how big our babe will be! I was a good sized baby (8-1/2lbs), but who knows!

alaskanteach, I will definitely check out nanipoos. Thanks for the suggestion! The resale value of the kissaluvs is one thing drawing me towards them. Do the other dipes have a decent resale value? Could I recoup 1/2 my cost? In the meantime, I will work on getting my post count up so I can visit the trading post!

I don't have any real advice for you since my little one isn't due until September also
but I have 6 Kissaluvs and 6 Nanipoos as part of my stash to try. I just got the Nanipoos in the mail today (thanks Delphine!) from the TP, they are really cute.

Just an FYI...

The TP rules have changed so that you can BUY from the TP with less than 60 days/50 posts, you just can't sell before then. So, go check out the TP!

I think all quality, cute, dipes in good condition have good resale value. However, Kissaluvs are very well known, so they go like hotcakes to people that may not frequent boards often, but do buy on ebay (or like site). I think quality newborn stuff in good condition will still resell well on the trading post, or other sites where there are very informed mamas.

I bought some of my newborn stuff here for Angelo, I found- nanipoos, bizzy beehive (was broke at the time though), first class baby 0 and little caboose, etc. It definately is a good place to get quality diapers, if you know what you are looking for. Also, you can post an in search of thread... and see if you get any offers. I like buying used dipes, as they are already broken in, you don't invest as much money, and you don't have to be a wizzbang Johnny on the Spot hyena, (although I love all you women who are- because I buy them from you when you are done!) as soon as some wahm stocks her site.

Nevermind, I figured that it must be sixty posts total at MDC, because why would you be posting on tp boards if you're not selling? I guess it could be ISO? DUHHH. Must learn to think before i type.

THis may be a silly question, but to sell on TP, is the sixty post minimum for the # of posts I've posted all over MDC or just on the TP and TPDIapers?

SOS are great fitteds and one size so they will fit newborn through PL, no need to keep buying as they grow. I was not big on Kissaluvs myself.

Good luck!

I would suggest toot sweet newborn fitteds and kindhearted women fitteds. (even though I've never used either- they're waiting for this little munchkin in Dec) I like the way they look, they seem to be constructed well, and they're a lot trimmer than the kissaluvs.

This is great!

I've put in an email to nanipoos. Now I'm off to search for the toot suite.

Are SOS the Motherease Sandies one size? I need to get up on my diapering acronyms!

I will keep my eye on the TP now that I know I'm eligible to buy. Of course, I still work on posting like crazy.
Maybe I will see some KHW...

Thanks so much all, sorry to not call everyone out by name. This is all sooo helpful! I don't feel so overwhelmed anymore and am excited to try everything!

hnybee, I totally know what you mean by this! I'm just starting a bit late...

SOS are here:

www.sosdiapers.com

They go quick when they're stocked though. One size dipes can be bulky on a newborn, but economical since you use them so long. When my 2 yr old dd was a nb, I tried an SOS on her and didn't like it because of the way it folds down, it was super bulky.

Kissaluvs aren't my favs, but I don't hate them. I like how stretchy they are. Some of mine seem like the elastic is all loose already though and I'm not too pleased with that, since we've only been using them a few weeks. I would consider them newborn diapers.

Nanipoos nb and First Class Baby size 0s are among the smallest I've seen. They hardly fit my baby, especially the FCB.

I do love how cute and perfect for a newborn Bizzy B Hive are, they can be hard to get though, she doesn't open for orders very often. She has great prints though. I also like Righteous Baby Fits Like a Mitten, if you can get ahold of some.

Country Cuttins and The Posie Patch make side snap newborn fitteds, I prefer front snap on my newborn (easier and quicker to get on), but they would be easier to get. I have a Country Cuttins and it's nice, I haven't tried a Posie Patch though.

I've heard good things about Sugarbums newborn fitteds and Lovey Bums newborn, haven't tried either of those personally though.

And also, you mentioned Motherease, those are easy to get, so you might want to try those. The One Size diapers would be bulky on a newborn, but some here have used them successfully. I've seen pics of the extra small Sandies on a nb and those look cute.

I thought I would put my two cents in since the topic of mother ease came up. some moms use the one size from birth quite successfully. I bought my whole stash in the mother ease one size for my newborn but...... He was tiny, 6lbs and slower to grow, I felt overwhelmed by the huge diaper and poofy bum (i was used to disposables with my other boys) and I ended up using a lot of disposable diapers when he was teeny, so this is what I plan for the next baby I am going to use xs sandies ( and all the other hard to get cute diapers made by wahms!)
I didn't like the fit of the onesize until my son was 12lbs. I really think it is worth the money to invest in either nb or sz 1 depending on how big your baby is.

First, I had a couple of kissaluvs, and there is certainly nothing wrong with them. I think you'd be quite happy with them. They are stretchy, and fit a nice range, including small babies. They weren't my favorite because they are quite thick and took a long time to dry, plus they got sort of rough with repeated washings. You may find these work really well for your first diapers.

I also second the ME XS sandies. You might try those and see how those work, although you'd probably want to get a few of the S ricci wraps since the air-flo covers may be a bit big at first. But, if you have a bigger baby, the one-size might work fine too. I think I started using those, at first just overnight, around 8-9 pounds.

Have fun building the stash!

ETA: Both of these dipes are readily available, and reasonably priced!!

Thank you so much, SiValleySteph, for starting this thread
. I was just coming over to diapering to dig through and try to find what to start getting for my next one - I'm due the beginning of Nov.

I hope this isn't considered too off topic or thread stealing
: , but anyone have any newborn covers they'd recommend? My babes aren't little (both over 8 lbs) but everything still seems big on them. What covers work well with the wee ones? I'm off to look up all the diaper recommendations now!

I don't have my newborn yet....he/she is still kicking butt inside my belly.

But I got some Sugarplum Baby fitteds and AIOs and they are really soft and squishy. And VERY cheap, and easy to get.

I also have a TootSweet small (www.tootsweetbaby.com) and really want more. They are soooooo soft!!! The smalls look small enough to fit a newborn, instead of getting the newborn size. And adorable, too. Tabitha is a talented WAHM!

I also live Bizzy B Hives, but they are hard to come by. Keep your eyes peeled on the TP for some!
I really liked the ME xsmall sandys for my dd when she was newborn

I liked Green Earth covers while his cord stump was healing, and Bummis and Bumpy after that.
