I was wondering if you have any of you had any ideas on how we can treat our well instead of using chlorine bleach.
We tested our well and it came back as having chloroforms present. We have to shock chlorinate the well, but don't want to use bleach if we can avoid it as we have to let the water run off somewhere. The well is on a certified organic/biodynamic farm.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

My DH does a lot of water testing and said to his knowledge there is nothing else. He said call some water testing labs and do some research online.

If the well is consistantly questionable them you could set up a fitration and UV light system. Our well is often muddy, and contains coloform and ecoli at times (the well taps into a deep under ground stream that unfortuatly is fed from an above ground stream about a mile away and in spring it turns bad with the runoff).
It cost us about $300 to set up, and about $150 a year for maintance on it - change the filters twice a year and the UV light once a year. It has worked very well for us for 6 years and our water is always good and we never have to question it or put nasty stuff down the well
We are also a certified organic farm - so i know the legal implcations of shocking the well.

We use a rainfresh system - but there are various types. If you are at all handy they arn't that hard to install. Ours handles all the water for the house and the barn (30head of cattle, 60 pigs and 400 turkeys) so a pile of water. $300 is alot more then the cost of shocking the well, but you have to think that it is pretty cheap compared to what people pay in town that have water meters and have to pay for water.

We also have a UV filter (I'm in the same county as you). Culligan put ours in but we must have got ripped off because it cost a lot more than yours. The annual maintainance costs are about what we pay. It is only for the house. I think it's great because we never have to worry about the water. We don't have to worry about testing it anymore.
