I am not the best at checking my bank statement but a lot of money has disappeared in the past month and I wanted to find out where it went. So today when it came I sat down to seriously review it. Two weeks ago I went to get gas and the lady accidentally put $170.00 instead of $17.00 in the bankcard machine. She pulled the cord and said it didn't got thorugh. I mistakenly trusted her and forgot all about it. There it was on my bank statement, a charge for $170.00 and $17.00 on the same day. Thank goodness we keep enough money in our account to where it didn't cause any checks to bounce or anything. I went up there and demanded my money back and got it after some fussing. If I hadn't checked my statement I probably would have never known about it.

As an afterthought, I know a lot of you have online banking. We bank with a hometown bank that only has 2 branches and doesn't offer online banking.

And if you have a choice between debit or your Visa check card, go with Visa. Cause in a case like above, you have all the protection of a Visa card, a debit crd has littl to none...

Check your credit card statement carefully too. I just got a huge statement that had a page and a half of charges, and I was going through it line by line. I found out that I was charged for a room by a hotel even though I had already paid for it through Hotwire. So I had to call the hotel and get them to remove the charge, which they did without a problem, thankfully.

My husband found a $9.99 charge to some company in Russia on his credit card statement, and it happened 3 times in a month. It's kind of a kind of fraud where the perpetrators hope you don't notice such a small charge so they can keep charging it.

Wow! That has happened to me 2 times in the last week or so! I will make sure to check my statement next month. So far I haven't had any big withdrawls that I don't know about, but you never know!

We bought some expensive stuff for my daughters room last week and it is showing twice on our statement so always always check. The store where we bought it said they have no record of charging us twice so it looks like a fight is in the works!

it's not always the fault of the store you're shopping at that will screw up your account. we bank at a credit union and they are absolute idiots. the worst error was when they took out our $700 tax refund b/c we hadn't both signed the check, which is okay, but after we both signed it and deposited it again, we checked our account online and realized that they had taken it out TWICE, so we had to go back and get that straightened out.

then there was the time they put our entire checking account on hold while they were waiting for a big check to clear. when we spent money before we noticed, they took it out of our savings account. luckily we noticed before we started bouncing checks.

the moral of the story is don't assume that the bank never makes a mistake. :
