The pattern I'm using does not say whether to slip purlwise or knitwise. Do you always slip purlwise when slipping from L needle to R needle? And do you always slip knitwise when slipping from R needle back to L needle?

If I'm not told otherwise, I always slip as if to purl when taking a stitch from the L to R.

But I'm confusing myself when it comes time to slip it back to the L needle.

If the pattern doesn't indicate, I always slip a stitch so that the stitch stays oriented in the correct position so always purlwise. If you slip knitwise, you're twisting the stitch in addition to slipping it. (The vogue reference book says this is the case unless you're decreasing....like SSK..if you are, slip knitwise on knit rows and purlwise on purl rows.)

Keep an eye on the "leg" of the loop. The part that hangs over the needle. Just keep the same leg towards you the whole time.
