Am I the only one using disposable wipes?

2052 Views 41 Replies 37 Participants Last post by  Margot Adler
I just switched to cloth diapers a little less than 3 months ago, and I haven't been able to make the switch to cloth wipes, and I don't know what is holding me back! Am I the only one?

I think it's because my husband, while really onboard with cd'ing, thinks that wipes would just be too much, kwim?

Any ways to convince him? What do you do for wipes? How does it work?
Any tips?

TIA!

I still use them when we are out but only because I haven't reconfigured my diaper bag and I really need to get more wipes to keep exclusively for diaper bag purposes. At home, though, it was an easy change. To me it is much easier to just toss the wipes in with the diapers than to have to make one trip to the laundry room for the diaper and another to the trash can for the wipes. Plus cloth wipes are thicker and so you use less and there is less chance of getting anything on your hands if you have a big messy one.
IMO wipes are even easier than diapers. Take a stack. Wet in sink. Set by changing area. Wipe when needed. Toss in pail.

I'm still using disposable wipes, but plan on buying some cloth ones when I have a little bit of extra money (we're completely broke right now). I find it to be a complete pain to have to find somewhere to throw the wipes away while out, instead of just sticking them in with the diaper

Yep, this is how it works in our house. I don't understand what would be hard about it. Seems like using CD w/ disposable wipes would be harder. You have to throw the CD one place, and the wipe in another.

I tell ya, get a few terry/velour wipes which feel like butter - you only need one for most wipes, even the messiest poo and you wash them with the dipe. My DH grumbled until he saw how easy and soft they are! Good luck!
We have some velour/sherpa wipes and they are DH's favorite!

It's easier for me to just drop the wipes in the pail with the diaper than sit them to the side to throw away.

I use a mix. I don't mind a washable wipe if she's just wet, but her poo's still at an incredibly gross consistency. And there's usually a lot of it. Ugh.
I CD and use disposable wipes. It's just what I've come to do. But I also use sposies at night, so I've always had 2 "cans" in my DS room - one garbage, one for CDs so it's just not that big of a deal.

For those die-hard environmentalists, it might not be good enough, but for this 'on her way to becoming crunchy mamma' it's still a great start! The # wipes I use and the space they take in landfills pales in comparison to the disposable diapers.
DS24m, DD10m... I don't use any wipes at all. Unless on very rare occasion we are out and absolutly not near a bathroom and then I will use a washcloth (wetted down with a water bottle).

The rest of the time I just run their bum under the sink and either pat them dry with a spare prefold (that can be used later once it drys) or just let them air dry as I am preparing the next dipe.

But to be fair we are "half enthusiastic EC'rs" so we "catch" most poops in the toilet.

I am really bad at using wipes anyway. It will take me like 3-4 wash cloths per change. As for disposable wipes... They all smell sooooo bad to me, like way worse than baby poop.

That's exactly why I switched to cloth wipes. SO much easier.

BUT, I do use a sposie diaper during 3 am changings, so I'm not perfect

I thought DH would freak at washable wipes but he loves them. It's so much easier to just drop everything into one bucket. We keep a stack of dry wipes and a small container of water that gets changed at least twice a day, running low on water is a good reminder. We keep disposables in the diaper bag, but just make sure we buy strong enough ones that they can go into the washer and dryer without a problem. Then we just pull them out when sorting laundry.
Just use some baby wash clothes. Wet them and put a little baby soap on them. I leave them by the sink and have a burt's bees soap bar that I wipe a wet rag on and then squeeze to get soapy. Super easy!
It's very easy to use cloth wipes when mom has allergies to lanolin, aloe, EDTA, imid. urea, synthetic fragrances, lavender, chamomile, etc.

We were on board with cloth wipes before we thought about CD. I do have a package of the playskool cottony wipes, but I don't use them (allergies). DH sometimes uses them when mopping up lots of triple paste or when I'm a bit behind on laundry.

Plus, we like cloth wipes for the same reason we like cloth diapers--less in the landfill. We pay by the bag for trash here and wipes/dipes fill a bag very fast.

We even bought a wipes warmer.
Baby protests less for those middle of the night changes.

I still use disposible wipes on really poopy bums. THen I can just thrown them out.
wfuteach- I feel the same way! I CD and use disposable wipes. I feel a little embarrassed and guilty, like I'm contradicting myself.

I just don't know which wipes are best and I have done so much research on CDs I am exhausted. Someone gave me organic flannel washcloths which we use to dry LO's bum to prevent diaper rash. After washing and drying them they came out all hard and rolled up like hot dogs. I also got a 5 wipe sample pack one time but I still haven't used them. It's silly but I am so damn frustrated right now with all the different washes and recipes, I just don't want to deal with trying to figure out what kind of fabric is low maintenance and works best on DS's bum. **sigh** I will though eventually. We use Pampers sensitive and they are expensive!

All of these tips are helpful!
I mostly use disposable wipes. Sometimes I'll use a spray bottle or just a wet washcloth, and I use baby washcloths as wipes, but disposables for some reason are easier for me
: I justify it by thinking "hey at least we're not using disposable diapers!" which have a humongous impact on landfills!

Yes, I use disposable wipes too. But I got so many for my baby shower that at nearly 8 months, I am on my last pack. My dd rarely poops, sometimes goes several days without one. I only use wipes on poopy diapers and she's never had a rash but once in cloth, so I don't want to mess with my system.
Maybe sometime I'll try cloth wipes, but I'm not sweating about the 6-8 I use per week now.

We use them. I don't think it's that big of a deal, compared with the reduction in our waste output due to using cd. We all do what we can, so it eases the cost in my mind.
