Eleanor is 5 1/2 months old, and is about 17lbs. I wear her most of the day, it has become our sort of default. I'm working from home now, so she just chills in her moby (I totally need a new carrier!) for the morning, then naps in her crib. She nurses in her sling about half the time.

Last week, we were visiting a friend who has a son just a few weeks older than Ellie, and he was on the floor, in a swing, in a bumbo or in his play gym pretty much all day. He is a happy and sweet kid, and developmentally seems right on course, as does our Ellie.

Should I aim to have her on the floor for a set amount of time each day? Will she miss out on important lessons and experiences by being worn 90% of the day?

I wouldn't think that at 5.5 months it is bad for her to be/to have been worn so much. She is happy and seems developementally in the right place. I wouldn't worry about it. I would start to integrate other activities into her schedule, right around now-6 months though. Tummy time is good, and so is time away from mom. I wouldn't do anything drastic but start with a 5% chunkof her day, then 10%.

Wearing your baby develops core muscles and develops head and neck control better than "tummy time" will.

keep on doing what you're doing mama.

If you need a break (and we all do) explore the other stuff... but developmentally none of it is necessary.

Pshaw, wearing is GOOD for her. We did just a few minutes a day of playing around on the floor together, working on sitting (which DD loved at about 6mo), but mostly I wore her. And she is great at yoga now at 3yo and brilliant and outgoing . I think FOR US (my style of interaction and habits) wearing her led to talking to her which really did make a difference, b/c she got verbal early and that makes life so much easier, when you know what they want and can help them. Also, she'd still get cranky at the end of the day around then, and a wrap and some swaying = happy family!

wearing the baby is nature's design. It is what a baby is built for and expects. The baby will let you know when she wants down. Then you can have fun on the floor. http://www.continuum-concept.org/cc_defined.html
