Is there a special guest to mentor the idols this week? What's the theme for song selection?

subbing. Are we up to 2 songs an episode yet?

I doubt they'll do 2 songs an episode with all the guest stars this week- though they may *normally* do two songs an episode once they get down to 6 (since they started with 12 per episode.)

I wonder if they'll have a topic either, other than "any song by any artist that ever gave to charity"

I believe the theme this week is songs that inspire hope or compassion or something.

So how exactly does the timing and the voting work?

Is it on at 8:00 everywhere in the country? Can somebody in California watch it early if they have a satellite that picks up NY stations? Can they then vote early, or do they have to wait until the voting is over in their area? What if somebody (like, say, MY BROTHER) has a California cell phone but lives in NJ? Would he be allowed to call from his cell phone after the show ends on the East Coast (assuming he even watches the show, much less cares enough to vote) or would he not be able to vote from his cell until the show's over in CA?

I'm sorry - but I'm predicting a big old SNORE tonight. You can't be fun and exciting (or rock out) when you're supposed to be

Yawn...wake me up when it's over.

I know I sound mean, but AI is my mindless fun - my happy place - not a chance to revisit upsetting events and politics...I get enough of that as a news-junkie.

You aren't the only one... how uncomfortable did Simon look in Africa? He couldn't wait to get back to his mansion in LA, but the producers made him do this charity gig. He was : not happy.

Edited to add:

Chris (Change the world by Eric Clapton) – He brought the nasal, but was really pretty good. Am I the ONLY one who didn't like Jordin's song this week? It just sounded sqeaky and scratchy to me. Or maybe it's just my ears- I don't do well with high-pitched noises and this song may have been approaching my "painful" zone.

Lakisha used to be one of my 3 favorites but she hasn't been doing well for a few weeks now. And we're at the point where going out just means not being in the top 5....

I totally agree. I really liked tonight's episode more than I was anticipating. I thought Melinda and Jordin were wonderful. Blake is usually one of my faves, didn't care for him tonight.

Looking forward to tomorrow night!

Take care,

Yes technically, Yes (I used to watch it at 5 pm when we had satellite--well, actually the TiVo recorded it then, I rarely watched it that early), No, Don't know, don't know, but I don't think you can call early with a CA cell phone just because I think they know where the call is coming from and do it that way. I think someone here said that in an earlier season, that it wouldn't work.

No, you aren't. I had the opposite reaction, not that she sounded squeaky, but that she was trying to sound too soulful as it was deep and quiet in the beginning. She hit that first sweet (in sweet silver sound of a lark) and it just sounded flat to me. I actually looked up from the computer in horror. Then at the end she sounded like she was straining and ran out of breath before she meant to. Which is fine 'cuz it's a big belty out note and all, but still.

I thought Chris R was unforgettable, but the song suited his voice well. I loved Melinda, I thought Lakisha was boring and it wasn't that great of a performance. I thought Phil was really good and I actually liked Blake for once--he is normally not one of my favorites. OK, maybe it was a little boring, but honestly, that's how I usually feel about him. Usually I feel like he is just skating along the tops of the notes, not really hitting the full depth of the it and he sounds sharp to me most of the time he sings. Either it worked in this song or he had a little more fullness to his singing than usual. I missed his striped pants.

OK, so I just ffwd through and listened to the singing again, and Lakisha wasn't as bad as I thought, but the notes just sounded kind of harsh to my ears or something. I wonder if she was trying for the twang that Fantasia naturally has. Both Lakisha and Jordin started out slow and quiet and I think Jordin just did it so much better. But, really, she had the better song for it. Even watching it again, though, I cringed when she sang the word sweet. And I think she should have cut off the note at the end just a little bit sooner so it didn't sound like she was choking it off.

I really think that Lakeisha has been the victim of poor song choices. She's got the talent, but it's like her voice only works on some styles or songs.

Good show. The charity footage was touching and sad.

I'm glad they're doing this charity thing. I hope they raise a lot of money. Although maybe I missed it, but I'd like to know more about where the money will go and how exactly it will save lives.

Wow- I felt like I was watching a whole different show than the judges. Maybe because it was charity night they were extra nice??

I thought Chris R was awful- flat, and is strange head movements. And the judges thought it was marvelous.

I feel bad for Lakisha b/c I think she is tremendously talented, but the fire in her seems to have gone out weeks ago. Maybe she is missing her little girl and the lifestyle there is hard. I don't know- but I don't think she's operating at full capacity.

I was glad to hear that Phil's kids were usually with him there- I was wondering how the wife was always in the audience and where the kids were. I thought his was soooooooooooo boring, I actually fast forwarded it, which I never do! I really don't get why he's still there- but he's a nice guy and all and I wish him well.

Melinda is an excellent singer, but what is her marketing niche? I feel like Jordin is a lot more commercial and appealing to a broad audience. I was SO happy that Simon told Melinda to lose the surprised look- and she is doing a good job of holding it back and graciously accepting compliments.

Poor Lakisha. Fantasia owned that song. Bad choice for her.

I thought Jordin was squeaky too.

Someone spiked Simon's Coke.

Hubby and I are AI junkies. I was bored last night though.

I wasn't too hot on Blake and he's usually a fave, but it was "okay dawg" for me.

Jordin- I was disappointed in, but I realized that she was straining because she was crying through most of the song (which is why Ryan gave her his tie at the end.)

Melinda- that girl could sing ANYTHING and she does it well. I'm with pp though- who would buy her album? What on Earth would they put on it? And if shes DOES win, they are going to make her sing crappy pop songs and she'll be screwed.

I'm thinking it's almost better for the best ones to get kicked on now in the top 4 or so- that way they can make their own style albums like Daughtry.

The whole charity thing leaves a bad taste in my mouth for some reason. I just can't QUITE buy it. :

I think Simon was just in 7th heaven this week because Sanjaya is gone. His good mood rubbed off on everybody.

BTW, the news here following AI had a segment on Sanjaya's "post AI publicity tour." He's doing just fine!

I think his singing is too boring unless accompanied by the visuals of his dancing. And he wasn't dancing.

Oh, that's a good point. You can't really sing well if you are crying. I didn't realize she was.

Hmmm, don't know. I would have bought Ruben's album, but when I listened to snippets of it in Borders, it seemed kind of like slow r&b stuff, so I didn't buy it. I think Melinda could do some current r&b/soul type stuff, something a little more poppish, kind of how Destiny's Child strikes me. To be fair, I never tried to listen to Ruben's stuff more seriously (like on iTunes where I could hear it better) to see if there was something I would like. I tried to buy Fantasia's album when it first came out, but iTunes only had the 3 songs that she sang on AI. I bought those, but never went back to check if more were released. I did recently check out Kelly Clarkson, Kimberley Locke and Taylor Hicks on iTunes and found some songs I liked.

Or maybe Melinda will go off in a new AI direction and sing inspirational stuff in the style of Kirk Franklin or something.
