Help! I had read about ammonia burn but I didn't think it would happen! We were still using disposables at night but I finally decided to try a BG stuffed with 2 Thirsties hemp for overnight.

She had been wearing a BG every night for about a week. Last night, I put her diaper on at about 9. When I took it off when she woke up at 8, she had a burn. It is about 1 cm by 1/2 cm. Ouch, its purple and it turned into a blister almost right away. I touched it but she didn't seem to be in much pain as she didn't give a reaction. The diaper wasn't wet all the way through both inserts but it was definetly nose-clearing ammonia stinky.

How do I treat it? How long before it goes away? Should I put her in disposables? Help!

I dont know much about amonia burn, but do you think it's because your dipes didn't get clean enough? As in, there was pee on them? Her pee shouldn't smell like amonia right away. After sitting a few days in a diaper, then yes, I think you'd smell amonia. When I CD'd dd for the first time, she had a simlilar reaction, and it was the detergent I had used. Little red, raised circles on her bum and lower belly. I just let her go diaper free for a day or two, changed the detergent and she was fine. I'd also skip the poly next to her skin, and put her in natural fibers only-like a prefold and wool, or a fitted and wool. Helps the skin breathe. HTH

When my dd wakes up with a too-soaking-wet dipe like that, I'll fill the sink with water & put some baking soda in it & give her a bumbath in that. It really helps a lot.
Be sure you dry off real good & put something like olive oil or a good lotion on it to moisturize helps too.

I'm not convinced ANY dipe can go that long. I would just try changing her more often. Even when we double up inserts in the BG's overnight, they are both soaked after 8 hours. I hate having to get up in the night to change my ds, but I have had to come to terms with it...

okay, to get the bacteria out (that's what causes urine to break down into ammina) do a cold rinse with some vinegar (maybe 1/2 cup?). Then do a long hot cycle with your detergent of choice. Make sure you use enough, I use 1/4 cup per load of diapers. 1Tbsp is not enough. Do an extra rinse and then toss everything in the dryer. If that doesn't solve the problem wash with 1/4 cup bleach. If you dilute it on water before adding the diapers you should not notice any difference in your diapers, even colored ones. Just make sure you run an extra cycle to really get that stuff out.

Thanks everyone! I did the BS bath, which we do anyway. She has been naked a lot today too.

It is just so weird! Last time I washed diapers, I did a hot wash with Charlie's, then a hot wash with dawn and 1/4 cup bleach, then about 4 hot washes and cold rinses with nothing (sometimes vinegar). I need to sun my inserts but we have nothing but rain til the weekend!:

So today I threw all the diapers in the washer again for some more hot washes, and one more with bleach. I make sure to rinse a ton of times. Maybe my hot water heater isn't hot enough and I need to boil my hemp. I did notice the ammonia smell in my pail after a couple days, which is why I stripped in the first place. Obviously, it got worse instead of better.

This was the only time the diaper smelled like ammonia when I took it off, and ITA that it is way too long for a baby to sit in a diaper. Poor baby, I feel so bad. I hope her owie gets better asap.
