Sorry...kinda graphic (but I need to know)!!

I'm 40 1/2 weeks pregnant and last night I woke up to a wetness feeling. I went in the bathroom, wiped and found what I would describe as the most fertile EWCM I could ever imagine.

I went back to bed.

This morning I am discharing MUCH more of the same...very slippery, very goopy.

Have my membranes ruptured? Or is this just normal late pregnancy cervical mucus?

I feel like such a dork because I don't know. I've always pictured amniotic fluid to be VERY watery and a big gush and this is more like a slow leak of EWCM. Right now I'm wearing a pad and it is just getting soaked.

Oh...contractions are very mild and very irregular (as they've been for the last several weeks).

Thanks!

~Erin (who is SO hoping this is IT)

It sounds more like you're losing your mucous plug to me, or maybe losing your plug with a high slow leak from the amniotic sack.

Either way, it sounds like you're gearing up for something, so rest as much as you can, eat well and keep hydrated!

Oh, I should add that amniotic fluid is very fluid, and is more like urine than mucous, except is doesn't smell like pee. In both of my previous labors the water didn't break until well into labor. With ds, the OB ruptured the bag at about 4-5 cms, and with dd, I broke the bag with a good strong push when I was told I was fully dilated. When I did that, I sprayed the midwife, the entire foot of my bed, the dresser a few feet away from the bottom of the bed, and think I even nailed the wall a bit! Think, water balloon getting squeezed and popping all of a sudden!(Well, the MW told me "One good push to break the water and you'll be pushing out your baby" so I was inspired!)

This is good though, as steady plug discharge would indicate the beginning of labor, even if it's just a start, without any of the risks inherant in early ROM. It shows that you're dilating, and those "mild and irregular" cntx are doing something!

Thanks!!!

Last time I checked I had a little bit of dark spotting so I'm thinking mucous plug too!

I've just finished doing a massive cleaning sweep of my house and now I think I will lie down and rest while DH makes me some breakfast.

With my last labour my water broke before I went into labour. I am fairly certain it started leaking 3 days before it was no question that it broke. It broke at 8pm Tuesday, I had continuous expelling of it in a way that can only be described as glugs of more mucous than when I'm ovulating combined with fluid. This mucous/liquid stuff continued non-stop until she was born at 4:47 Wednesday afternoon. There was no bloody show until right before she was born, I've never had bloody show with my labours until right before they come out.

Erin ~

I agree that amniotic fluid is very watery, but yes to what plantmommy said that in early labor you could be seeing a slow leak with much more mucous discharge.

Either way, rest and drink and fuel up for your hard work! You can do it, mama!!! Can't wait to read your birth story!

We'll be thinking of you - keep us posted...

Sounds to me like you are losing your mucus plug, or atleast parts of it. I'll bet you have that baby soon! I remember looking for mine everytime I wiped during the last month of my pregnancy. I finally lost it about 24 hours into my labor.

I just want to agree with everyone else......

I lost my plug with my son in bits and it started out as just loads of heavier discharge........

Amniotic fluid is watery........with me I stood up and it was like I peed myself except it wasn't pee and the gushes that came for the rest of the day just felt like warm water.

Yep, sounds like mucus plug to me, too. Mine seemed like really gooey egg-white cervical fluid, too, and sometimes it was mixed with very pale pink tinge and sometimes just clear.

Rest up, mama! Your babe will be in your arms soon!

warmly,
claudia
