I'm reading The Tightwad Gazette and just came across an interesting letter from a reader. The book is focused on ways to save money, and isn't breastfeeding the ultimate frugal feeding system?
Dear Amy,
I work with mothers and infants a lot. Often they get excited over saving money by making their own baby food. Baby food, however, is what sociologists term "an acquired need." While it may be the social custom to use it, or expectation to use it, it is entirely the fabrication of baby food companies and only serves to fill their pockets. It can certainly be done away with. A breast-fed infant can go directly to table food when ready. I always figured if a baby needed strained peas at three months, I'd have a third one for strained peas.

You go, sista.
