Any ideas for making a chocolate chip cookie recipe healthier? Is there a way to add whole wheat flour? Flax seeds? Anything else to make it healthier? Thanks for any ideas.

I use whole wheat pastry flour instead of white flour. I just make sure to get a very finely ground, soft-feeling pastry flour. I bought Bob's Red Mill ww pastry flour once, and that was a mistake - it's really gritty and not good for desserts! With fine-ground pastry flour, though, I have no problems, and even though I know it's ww, I can't tell.

I also sometimes substitute whole barley flour (again, it's finely ground) for part of the ww pastry flour. Barley has some different nutrients than wheat, so I figure it's good for variety.

If you do use flax seeds, be sure to use ground ones.

You could always add some nutritional yeast to the dry ingredients for a boost of Vitamin B12. I've done this in muffins and it works out nicely.

I'd go for a chocolate chip oatmeal cookie with plenty of walnuts, and sub whole wheat pastry flour for the usual a.p. flour.

Basic modifications: ww pastry flour and/or oat flour (grind oats in a blender) in for the all purpose flour. Butter and eggs are healthy if they're from a good source. Replace the sugar with rapadura, and even then, I'd only use 1/2 or 1/3 of the amount that they ask for. Add some nuts. Add some flaxseeds.

I've tried this recipe:

1.5 c oats
1 c ww pastry flour
1 c chopped walnuts
1 c choc chips
1/2 t salt
1/4 t baking soda
1/2 c safflower oil (or any kind of oil, really)
1/2 c maple syrup
2 T water
2 t vanilla extract

I know I've made it before, but I can't remember what it turned out like, sorry!
(T = tablespoon, t = teaspoon)
