Is it OK for a 2-yr old?

He's a former vegan (I'm still vegan - so while I know enough vegan nutrition, I don't know the slightest thing about eggs) who still doesn't do dairy. He eats all fruit and veg + fish and eggs.

But lately he's on a kick where he wants an egg for dinner every night. Part of it is the fun of cooking it - he gets to crack it, he gets to dump kelp over it, etc.

Anyway, do I need to worry about cholesterol (or anything else) at his age?

An egg every day at his age is perfectly healthy. Even for healthy adults it is acceptable to have one egg every day. It use to be thought that because egg yolk contains cholesterol (about 200 mgs), it was not healhty for people with high cholesterol. The advice on that has changed in recent years, becaue now scientists think that we don't absorb all of the cholesterol we eat, and much of it goes right through us. Generally if a doctor is worried about a person's cholesterol level, he will say to eat no more than 2 or 3 eggs per week--but this recommendation is reserved for people with diabetes or high risk of heart disease.

It sounds like he loves his eggs right now, which is wonderful as eggs are such a nutritious food. Let him enjoy his egg.

According to TF principles, there's nothing wrong with having an egg every day, and there's probably something in the egg that his body is craving (although I don't have my own yet, the kids I know have an uncanny innate knowledge of what they need food-wise) so I would give it to him. If you're interested in knowing more about cholesterol and its importance in children's diets, you might want to read "Nourishing Traditions" or "Eat Fat Lose Fat"; both give a lot of good information about the health benefits of saturated fat in the diet.

Egg and kelp is a FABULOUS dinner for a 2-year old. By all means, let him have it every day.

My DD loves her eggs too. It's neat because we have chickens in our back yard (not ours, but we do get eggs from them) and DD's favourite thing to do is go and check the "bock-bock"s for "ehh ehh ehh"s. She likes hers soft-boiled, preferably with "tooost".

Eggs are great nutrition, and IMO eggs from happy pastured chickens are about as veganesque an animal protein as you can get. Without a rooster around, it's not like the chicken was going to do anything with that egg anyway!

Serena, that sounds so yummy!
I love scrambled eggs that have been scrambled in butter (I also love adding some grass-fed cow cheese in there too). Lately though my boys have been loving their eggs over easy.

DD is three and easily eats three or four eggs per day. She often just eats one or two of the yolks, but still ... the girl loves her eggs. I figure it's a kick, it will pass like all of the others have passed. Not to mention that I feel like eggs are great nutrition for her, so I'm happy to give them to her.

Yep, we love pastured eggs. My 1 year old has a scrambled egg yolk every day. Me and DH have 2 eggs each. My two older boys age 4 and 7 don't care for eggs very much so I try to sneak them into anything I can. I make ice cream and put 6 egg yolks in it. (I actually think it makes the ice cream taste better.)

My grandfather said that eggs were the nearest thing to a "complete" food. I think there was something to that...

We eat a lot of eggs over here, too!

Eggs are so nutritious!! DD who is almost 2 eats 1 or 2 every morning. She likes them scrambled with "fry" on them. Fry being about a tsp of ketchup (thanks daddy
). She is confused about ketchup and fries as we sometimes have oven baked fries.

The only word of caution I've heard about eggs is that Dr. Mercola recommends having one egg-free day every week to prevent from developing an egg allergy.

I have no idea where his research for that recommendation comes from. His research usually comes from *somewhere,* even though some of his ideas seem pretty off the wall. (OTOH, more and more of them are sounding sane as we venture further from the wall ourselves. LOL.)
