Dear boobies,

How long have we been friends? Not long really, it's only recently i've grown to love you as i do.

You arrived when i was 12, zero to DD overnight, with the stretchmarks to prove it. You continued to grow for a few years, by the time i was 16 i had F-cup bra's. I will admit i hated you back then. You were big, too big, you attracted negative attention everywhere i went. Boys sniggered and tried to "accidentally" grab you, girls whispered bitchy comments, men openly ogled at you, even though i was very obviously only a young teen, grown women gave me dirty looks. You were not the pert fashionable breasts of the magazine girls, and my BMI was 19, there was nothing i could do about it. I was 14 the last time i could pass the pencil test - big heavy breasts rest on the ribs, that's just how it is.

I ignored you, then eventually i began to buy prettier bras, though in retrospect they did NOT fit! I grew to grudgingly like you because you made it so easy to attract men, but i quickly realised that if i used you to do so i only attracted one sort of man. Our love-hate tug of bra strap continued. At the end of my teens i gained a lot of weight and you expanded even more. I finally went and got fitted properly, i was forced to by being unable to buy bras in regular stores any more. You were a 36GG

I had DD1 when i was 25. You expanded only half a cup size during pregnancy but when my milk came you were huge. Velvet rugby balls. My 36J nursing bra was at least 2 cup sizes too small and i was topless for a week, wearing a cotton sling made of a torn up t-shirt slung around my neck and under you both to try to take the ache off my ribs. Eventually you shrank to fit into the HH and J bras i wore for the next few months.

When DD1 was 4 months my supply began to bomb and i hated you. It turned out to be my thyroid gland, but it was you who got the blame. How i despised you, i would lie in bed with each of you flopped into an armpit thinking how useless you were - expensive to house, sagging, ugly, and insult-to-injury - empty.

DD2 was born in June this year, and finally our relationship has become what it is. My milk this time is plentiful (the thyroid is under control!) and DD2 thrives.

You sag, you wonderful things! I lie my baby on my forearms and flop a nipple to her mouth as i get on with my own tasks online. I lean slightly to one side in bed and DD2 roots and easily finds a nipple to suckle to sleep. I don't need a nursing pillow, i have a LAP! When DD2 is distracted she can sit up and literally bend the breast round to one side so she can nurse and look around the room. I never thought i could celebrate such a thing but as i see other friends struggle with multiple pillows, lost sleep from being unable to feed their bigger babies lying down, or suffer with distracted babies that twist and wriggle rather than feeding peacefully, i am so grateful.

A friend remarked to me the other day "i was telling my friend, you can do AMAZING things with your breasts" and i felt so proud of you. I spent years wishing i could have you surgically reduced, and now i would not trade you for a million pounds.

So here's to you my long, sagging, floppy, veiny, milky friends. I am finally able to appreciate your very practical, maternal, ordinary-but-magical sort of beauty.

I have a friend with very similar breasts and they really are AMAZING! She's tandem nursing her 3 children ages 4, 3 and 4 months. She calls them her "go go gadget boobs" and often uses them as pockets lol. She keeps her cell phone on vibrate under one and her wallet under the other. :lol She's like a super hero in my eyes :)
