I just got the nutrition book Child of Mine by Ellyn Satter. It has been recommended to me a number of times since we've had some food / nutritional concerns with my daughter. Ugh. What tired drivel. She has a section on weaning in the infant part of the book, which says that there's a "window for weaning" when the infant starts solid foods, and that if you don't wean then, you're misusing breastfeeding and that the baby will never stop nursing. (Huh? Really? So are there lots of women secretly following their kids to college to nurse, and somehow just staying quiet about the whole thing?) It also says that if you nurse past the introduction of solid foods, you're nursing just for your own pleasure and essentially doing a disservice to your baby.

I'm getting rid of the book, obviously, but am startled and incensed. How can anyone in good conscience WRITE this crap?!!

It's disgusting that people can get away with writing anything they feel like, whether it's true or not!

I recently read Positive Discipline the First Three Years, and it said something similar, although it didn't go quite that far (I don't think.. I actually stopped reading 'cause it made me angry). It basically said if you don't wean your baby before she's a year old, you're going to be stuck nursing until she's five or six.

Idiots.

Here's a thought...let's all go to Amazon and write 1 star reviews panning these books! I'm game, if you can copy out a few quotations so that we can see what she says exactly (if you keep them to 100 words or so to comply with the board rules).

Yeah, I'm getting bitten, twiddled, hair-pulled, eyelid-grabbed, bounced on and squirmed on for my OWN PLEASURE!!!

Ohmygosh! I thought this would be a good book since it was referenced so often in Kathleen Huggins' "Nursing Mother's Companion" and it was on my Amazon Wish List.

I have a tendency to look at the reviews on Amazon and read a few 5-stars and a few 1-stars. This was really revealing for this book. The last review as a 5-star said the book was great because it talked about how to sterilize bottles and "formula pros and cons." This tells me the author does not really advocate breastfeeding at all. Is this a correct assumption? There's a pretty long review with a 1-star rating that was really informative too.

In the same vein, I glanced over a copy of the baby whisperer the other day, just so that I could have an educated opinion, and I could not believe the sh*t she spouts! Basically tries to talk moms out of BF, but not in so many words, YK?

Nak, or I would give examples.

I had looked at the Baby Whisperer and asked about it in another thread... another mommy gave this link. http://www.kellymom.com/reviews/revi...whisperer.html Scary stuff, and I don't think it's just because Halloween's around the corner... *sigh*
