Okay, this is just a vent. Today at the children's storytime at a local bookstore, a woman came in with three kids that were approximately 2 and 3 years old. She ushered them into the story area and then said:

"Okay, it's time for you to sit on your BUM-BUM"

So, I'm looking around for some kind of playmat or seat (the bum-bum) she is going to pull out of the stroller for the kids to sit on, and then I realize that she is telling them to sit down on the floor. I thought that was rather odd, kind of like telling someone to sit on their butt-butt, or their bottom-bottom. And she kept on doing it the entire story time in this odd sing-song childish voice, which was grating to me because it was so condescending. It was almost like she was trying to see how many times in a half hour she could say the word bum-bum.

"Randolph, BUM-BUM"
"Mary-Jane - it's BUM-BUM time."
"Elaine - BUM-BUM now!"

I don't know whether it was the actually word bum-bum, or the fact that this woman was speaking practically in baby talk to her toddlers (a pet peeve of mine) but now I can't get that stupid word out of my mind. :

Okay, rant over!!!

bum-bum is my favorite word : I use it absolutely all the time. Sometimes just bum, but usually bum-bum. It was one of dd's first words.

It's a tender word for a tender part

That would annoy me too, but probably not as much as a mom telling her kids to sit on their butt. I hate that word, especially for kids.

I say butt butt... but usually when I am asking my ds if he has a stinky butt-butt... he is 8 months old, so it is only for my own humor I guess.. I am sorry that you were annoyed, and I can imagine that that might have been very annoying for you...

Here's a thought... the next time that you see her, ask: "Might I ask what a bum-bum is?" Then give her the most vacant and confused look that you can muster... This might make you laugh when you are on the way home.. lol.

We just use bum. Everything under her diaper she calls her bum. (it actually sounds more like boom when she says it.

We call it a "BOON-da" I was a nanny for a family that had a Portuguese nanny before me. That's what she called their bottom. Of course, I have probably butchered the word.

Yeah, we use "butt" in our house too. Or at least we did till DD went to Kindergarten, used it with her teacher and then came home to tell us that we had taught her a "dirty" word.

We say "boot" or sometimes "bootie"

It's pretty dorky - I imagine people in bookstores think I'm lame (but I don't say it over and over!.)
