Another clothing rant

ARGH! I still don't have an Easter dress. The only dress that looks "right" on me at this point is black and just not appropriate for Easter.
: All of the dresses are either way too clingy or just hang like a tent. I am soooo frustrated. I don't want to go out and spend a lot of money on a maternity dress that won't be worn much, kwim? I do have one dress that would be just perfect if I could wear one of those pillows from the dressing room at the maternity store. It's adorable with a big belly but with a smallish one, I just look fat. I'm READY for a big belly that says "Yes, I AM pregnant!", not just pigging out on the Easter candy (altough I am doing that, too
).
Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.

Oh I SOOOO know what you mean. I am having such a hard time with clothes too. My biggest problem is that my belly grows funny because I am heavy to begin with. Same thing happend when I was pg w/ DS. Above my belly button is big & round & fairly hard. Below my belly button (where the baby actaully is) is smaller & quite mushy. So this makes my belly lumpy & just really fat looking. I guess that makes my issues with my body more so than the clothes, but the clothes still don't do much to help things

Yeah, I had that problem too. I ended up buying a regular skirt 3 sizes too big for me with an elastic waistband and a maternity top on clearance at WalMart the other day. I think I paid $14 for the entire outfit. The colors aren't exactly Easter-ish (more Thanksgiving-ish, but pastel skirts/dresses look dumb on me
) but they aren't black and aren't a tent and I'm hoping I can get both Mother's Day and DD's dance recital in June out of that outfit (I should be able to do it).

I completely forgot about Mother's Day.

Oh, I completely agree! I really wanted a white or cream gauze dress, but they were all $75 - $300+, which is obscene. I finally found a really cute one with cap sleeves and a v-neck at Motherhood Maternity for $29.98, which isn't too bad for normal clothing prices, much less maternity! And soooo comfy.

My biggest pet peeve with maternity clothes is that the shirts all have the little cinch or ties under the bust, but my bust is too big to fit in the alotted bust space, so the shirt just balloons straight down and can't be cinched adorably. I don't get that cute little empire waist thing, just a ski jump effect. Thanks a lot, maternity designers.
LOL, you guys crack me up. Yesterday was the first time I wore maternity out in public for the whole day, and I'm not sure if I just looked fat or pregnant, it was just an old navy T with mat overalls. Noone asked when I was due, which I think was a bad sign. LOL. I'll have to get one of those obviously maternity shirts that say 'baby' on them, even though I hate shirts that say things on the front. If I needed to get dressed up I think I could still get away with a denim dress I have, I'm not liking this inbetween stage, I wanna look like a hippo! Remind me of this in August.

Totally, me too! Empire waists help -- those actually make me look pregnant. But magpiedee, I relate to your problem with those too -- most of them, unless I tie the tie VERY loosely, end up showing WAY more cleavage than I want to. And the ones with elastic empire waists, I have to tug down all the time so it goes UNDER my boobs instead of right across them. I found two at Motherhood Maternity that work and they are my favorite shirts right now. I feel like a fertility goddess in them
In my maternity t-shirts I just look like I've got a beer belly. I know I will want to smack myself for this in a few months!

thank goodness i'm...

a) not religious, so dressing up for church on easter sunday is not happening
b) living nowhere near family, so dressing up for easter dinner is also not happening
and
c) living in oregon, where you can go to a 4 star restaurant downtown in your jeans and a nice shirt

Well, I certainly intend to put on shorts the minute we get home!

And I'm so jealous of you living nowhere near family.

I don't know if this helps, but I've found that wearing one of those "support" belts (wide elastic that goes under belly and behind back, under all your clothes) makes a is-she-pregnant-or-fat belly look recognizably pregnant. I tried one because of a umbilical hernia that was causing some pain, and presto, I looked pregnant AND I felt no more pain.

That's a great tip-thanks mojumi!
hey myhoneyswife--they have a cute maternity tank at old navy that says filled with love on the belly. they've also got one with a daisy that says you are my sunshine. They're both really cute and a subtle way to show off your pregnancy.

So as for Easter...I wore a simple a-line dress that was about 5 sizes too large (not maternity) that I found at a thrift store. I got one of those clipy thingies for the back so it fit between my boobs and my belly. I got several compliments on how cute I looked, so it couldn't have been too bad. The dress was sleeveless so I didn't have to worry about the sleeves looking too big and I just wore it with my denim jacket (not maternity either). I've also worn it with a simple white cardigan (also not maternity).

I've found clothes that are slightly too large, but on clearance, to be a nice alternitive to maternity some of the time. the large skirts work nicely, but most larger tops just make me look fat with small boobs.
