What does it mean when there is a blood spot in an egg? Is it still okay to eat if you remove the spot? I've been getting eggs from a local family and the past few times a couple of the eggs have had a spot of blood in them. Any info will be appreciated.

I may be mistaken but I think that means the egg has been fertilized. Does the family have a rooster? It should be fine to eat. We kept chickens when I was in high school and had a rooster briefly and I vaguely remember seeing that blood spot in the eggs while he was around.

I thought it meant a fertilized egg too but we don't have a rooster and our eggs have a little spot in them occasionally. The eggs are fine - you don't need to worry. You can remove the spot or not as you wish.

cathe,
that's funny. i always thought it meant it was fertilized, too! well, i guess that pretty much proves that wrong, eh?

i have heard things about it being best if they *are* fertilized (more nutritiious) but i never discovered any info on it more than wives tale type info. i don't ever remove anything from my eggs, though so i don't think you'd have to unless it bothers you.
