I think they were overreacting a tad bit getting into the emergency lane and speeding.
I know they refused the ambulance because it would have taken them to the closest hospital and I read in the comments that they actually passed 5 hospitals in there trip to the one that they wanted to go to so obviously it wasn't an emergency in there minds.
I personally dont believe that her contractions were 3 minutes apart when she was pulled over because the baby was born 5 hours later after they finally arrived at the hospital.
Not that Im saying it was OK for the officer to cross examine her or to expect her to show him her pregnant belly as proof.
I do think it was a bit ridiculous that they had to wait for the first person to get there ticket before they could be dealt with.
So I think both sides were in the wrong.

My contractions were two minutes apart when I left for the Birth Center and when I got there I was dialated to 2 cm. Dd wa born 7 hours later.

Yeah, how far apart contractions are is only loosely tied to when the baby will be born. Especially if mom gets stressed out.
But I agree it sounds like fault on both sides.
Glad I don't need to decide when to drive to the hospital.

Thats exactly what my dh said when he saw the news this am. Yea they might have been speeding because of the closeness of the contractions. One more thing I don't have to worry about. Ahhh. Hb.
I think that she probably thought things were possibly further than they were b/c sometimes contractions are just worse in teh car- cuz you're cramped and can't get comfortable or move. Car contractions were always worse for me than the ones 2 hours later at the hospital.
And also my labors always start w/ contractions 3 minutes apart. they just start off mild and get stronger and stronger and a little longer lasting- but they never start far apart and then move closer together.
But this cop obviously had some issues. I mean really- who asks to see a woman's belly? insane...

I totally blame the cop - this was ridiculous! I also think we should be really supportive of a mom's desire to give birth at a particular hospital given how much we know about how the hospital can affect how birth goes. I'm surprised that anyone would question her not wanting an ambulance or passing other hospitals.
I agree that it's a good reason to stay home

Though the mainstream seems to generally see imminent birth as an Emergecy, I don't think it is viewed the same as imminent death. They were in a hurry because they either though birth was close at hand and they wanted her doctor with her medical records; if they thought her life was in danger they probably would have stopped at the first one. Though perhaps they didn't know all five were there. Some locations have several hospitals in a concentrated area. I used to have to drive downtown to go to the Dr, and I past at least 3 hospitals (private I think) to get to mine, with in a block of each other.

Come on, there are so many explanations for this; maybe they don't understand how to time contractions, maybe they never heard of emotional sign posts, maybe her contractions were that frequent but not productive, maybe her contractions were 3min apart but slowed once she was at the hospital, maybe...
