DH and I are looking to move to PA. We'd either like to live in a rural area or small town/village-y type... with kid-friendly neighborhoods. But because he's a pilot, he needs to be less than 2 hours from Newark Airport... preferably not more than 90 minutes. (He makes the trip a couple times a week to and fro.) Any ideas? I'm a NYer and don't know areas in PA well.

Thanks for any help!!

You would likely do better in the northern suburbs near the PA turnpike, that being said, Downingtown is nice small townish with a lot of nice ammenities around it, good schools. My daughter walks from elementary, but Middle and High schoolers get bussed. The turnpike is about 10 minutes away.

You could try Eagle, PA, Glenmoor, Still in D'town schools (good schools,)

If you have the $$, you could go to the Eagleview development, just a minute or two from the turnpike and really pretty planned small town with shopping within walking distance.

Edited to say I'm assuming he'd be going to Newark early in the AM to avoid rush hour.

W.Chester has a nice vibe, but it's further south as is Media. We're likely too far west as well. Some northern suburb would be better, but I'm not as familiar with them.

Is he relocating in the Philly area with a lot of business travel to Newark?

How rural do you want? I live in NEPA. There are so many great area's here! You can have a place so deep in the woods no one will find you, or live "in the borough". The borough meaning population 1200, and meaning you have a church, tiny hospital, school, and grocery store and BASIC necessities. Pretty much everything is in the mountains so its really pretty. I don't know how long it takes to get to that airport, though.

Hey, thanks, ladies! Going to start looking on realtor at these locales now...

No, he's not relocating to the Philly area per se. We live in Westchester County, NY now (renting)... but it's just too pricey here to buy anything. Regional pilots don't make the big bucks like the major airline pilots do. That being said, we're fortunate in that we have a wide area in which to live. Most pilots are gone for 4 days, back for three. So he drives to Newark Airport, flies for 4 days (stays in hotels) and then drives back. So it's okay if he's a couple hours away, you know? He's not doing the drive that often.

DH's family is in Bucks County (1/2 hour from Allentown.) But I uh... don't want to live TOO close to them, lol. So I'm looking at other options. It will be hard to move from NY, but the prices here are outrageous. And I love how folks are so friendly in PA. A generalization, I know. But it's a nice state.

Ok, enough of my book. Thanks again and in advance!

Rural is great. Love those farmfields.
But I don't want to live in the woods. Small little boroughs are great too.

Any town suggestions?

Sounds like the Lehigh Valley area is right for you! Newark is a straight shot out I-78. There are some lovely communities near Easton and west of Allentown that are close to 78. Northhampton is a little ways up 33, which you can take down to 78. I'm partial to the Parkland area west of Allentown. It's still pretty rural, but very close to some wonderful resources. Further out 78, getting closer to Kutztown, might be worthwhile, too.

Check out Susquehanna County. Lots of farm land, woods, etc. And very close to interstate 81. Driving to malls/cities isn't too bad. Its 30 minutes or so to the Mall in Johnson City NY, 45 minutes to the Mall in Dickson City, PA, and 50 minutes to the mall in Scranton PA. I love it here. I am away from the traffic, the hussle and all of that, but not too far away from resources. Just look out when it snows since its in the mountains...

Are you able to meet many other crunchy families in your area?
