I swear I have never had a bad one. But today we were at Ikea (in Ross Township, Pittsburgh area for any other tribal members out there) and we let our 3 year old DD into the Ball Room. Being a newbie, we didn't realize that we could have let her there by herself the entire time we were shopping. So we let her go in as we were leaving and then realized we were going to be there for a while.

So I took the opportunity to nurse the twins, one at a time of course. A mother was there with her two teenagers (one boy and one girl) and her little boy was in the Ball Room. She sat down by DH and then said to me "You know, they have a nice family bathroom with cushioned chairs if you would be more comfortable."

I wasn't sure if she was telling me that I should go there or if she was just being nice because I was sitting on a wooden bench as opposed to the more comfy seats in the other room. So I said "That's ok, I want to watch my daughter playing anyway." Then she explained that she was just making sure that I knew there were more comfy chairs. Then we went on to have a very nice conversation where she said "Good for you! Nursing twins! I nursed mine too...etc." We went on to talk about how much easier it is to nurse than to worry about bottles, co-sleeping, etc.

The funny thing was that when I sat down, my only worry was her teenage son and that he might be uncomfortable. But he was the coolest teenager. He never blinked or looked away or looked the least bit uncomfortable. And her teenage daughter came over while I was nursing and was fussing nicely over the babies. Then I saw another woman walk by with her baby in a sling. Is Ikea crunchy or what?

I think Ikea IS crunchy! I've nursed there a couple times and have never had any flak, have seen other moms nursing there too. In fact the last time I was there I was telling my friends I was going to go into the lounge to nurse my son, and an employee was walking by and she says 'Just pick a bedroom and have a seat!' IT was pretty funny!

Yeah, I've noticed teenage boys tend to be un-fazed by nursing. When my oldest was born, I was living with my teenage brother, and his friends would come over, pat my baby's head, pinch her cheeks, and be completely oblivious to the fact that I was nursing. When my mom would inevitably point it out, they'd just shrug. Oh well, the baby's feeding! I've noticed I've gotten the most flak from teenage girls and middle aged men. Teenage boys and MOST 20-something moms have been for the most part very supportive.

Hmmm i wish that was my experience last weekend at Ikea. the nursinmg room was one small chair in front of the door to the bathroom. i ended up nursing in the cafe, much to the distress of the people around me, esp. the family who prmptlyy stood up and left giving me dirty eyes. maybe it was just a ct ikea thing!

I have found Ikea a great place to nurse, twice lying down on their beds (which I eventually bought) to nurse. Ahhhhhh.

What I hate is that they have autoflush toilets in the family bathroom. My kids are scared of them.

ITA with the teenage boys getting a bum rap thing! Shortly after I brought DD home from the hospital, she still hadn't learned to nurse and was taking EBM from a bottle, and my brother (he was staying with us for the summer) came home with a childhood friend of his. His friend oohed and aahed over the baby and then saw me warm up the bottle for her. He looked very alarmed and said, "I thought all babies breastfed!" He is a very sweet kid, and didn't mean anything offensive by it, so I explained our situation, but told him I was glad he had that attitude because it meant that he'd be supportive of a future wife. He said, "Heck yeah...for starters, it's free...she can breastfeed our kids 'til they're 12!"
