I know similiar news articles have been discussed here before, but here is a new one:

http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/hea...cle1217831.ece

"A study published last month calculated that if all men in sub-Saharan Africa were circumcised, it would prevent almost six million new cases of HIV infection and save three million lives over the next 20 years.

Dr Feachem said the finding was one of the most significant in the battle against Aids and offered real hope of slowing the spread of the virus. The issue is to be debated at the World Aids Congress, which opens in Toronto next week."

I still don't see any research being quoted from studies published by major, peer-reviewed medical journals. I'm going to ask my cousin who is an urologist (anti-circ the last time I knew) what he thinks about all this. It will also be interesting to hear what the conference says about it.

I just don't undertand why we are the only people who see the flawed logic here!!! EDUCATION will slow down the rates of HIV.....not genital mutilation. WHY DON'T PEOPLE GET THIS?????

The majority of sexualy active men in America are circ'd, so I'm sure it's safe to say that of all the men who are infected, the majority of them are cut. What happened to their protection?

The people in Africa suffer from a lack of education...and the myth that having sex with a virgin will protect one from AIDS. LOL...that myth is about as logic as the one these scientists are trying to push on us.

WE ARE GONG BACKWARDS!!!!!!

I dont agree with promoting RIC in any country to stop the spread of HIV but if it was that easy to "educate" people about transmission, we'd have done it already. Thereare many organizations trying, trying to hand out condom's, and still HIV continues to spread.

If adult circ stems the spread in irresponsible heterosexual male's, let them get circ'd. But it should be the adult males decision to sacrifice part of his penis to avoid transmission and he should be told about the risk's and what is lost.

Thoughtful letter to the ed:
The study claiming to show circumcision will protect millions against
HIV boils down to 29 circumcised men who didn't get HIV compared to
20 who did. That's a wild extrapolation, when the circumcised men
were exposed to more safe-sex advice than the control group, and the
experiment was not (and could not be) double-blinded or placebo-
controlled.

Even if circumcision offers this much (or little) protection to a
population, it will be impossible to convince individuals (painfully,
visibly and sexually altered) that they have not been immunised, and
the outcome will be a disastrous abandonment of proven prevention
methods.

Circumcision has long been a "cure" looking for a disease, and we
should be very suspicious of the latest claims for this reason only.

My SO sent me this, and my response was that circ'ing does not prevent HIV; good, healthy practices reduce the risk of HIV. Duh.

(SO isn't really pro circ - I am just working with him to be decidedly ANTI circ
)
